What was best play of Games 162?

By Evan Brunell

The morning after baseball's latest contender for the most exciting final day of the regular season, we're left trying to figure out just which of the improbable, impossible events that led to a night to remember was best.

Rays coming back from 7-0? Evan Longoria whacking a three-run home run to pull the Rays within one? How about Dan Johnson, he of a .167 batting average in 260 plate appearances over the last four years jacking a game-tying home run in the ninth? What about Evan Longoria's game winner, shades of Mark McGwire's 62nd home run?

But there were plenty of other memorable plays. How about Robert Andino shocking the Sox with a game-winning single in the ninth? Or earlier in the game, when Dustin Pedroia whacked a homer to give the Sox a lead? The Phillies sending a dagger in the hearts of Braves with a Hunter Pence RBI single in the top 14th? But Craig Kimbrel, he of 40 saves on the year, had to blow the game for Pence to walk off. Similarly, Jonathan Papelbon imploded for the Red Sox, handing Baltimore the victory. The Cardinals razed their way to a 8-0 win, but how huge was St. Louis' five-run first on the strength of five run-scoring hits?

There are no shortage of amazing plays or occurrences from Wednesday night. We ask you: Which one was the best?

What was best play of Games 162?

I believed previously it was likely to be lots of fantastically dull traditional hand in, but it surely undoubtedly in actual fact spent to find my time.

Games 162

I was so stoked before, during and after the games on Wed nite, Sept 28, 2011.  There was this great excitement and anticipation before it all started.  Would the Red Sox show their top notch stuff or would the wilting continue?  Do the Rays really have enough to knock off the Yankees in a do-or-die game such as the one they were about to play?  Did the Braves have enough pitching depth to put it to the top of the heap Phillies?  And where the heck did these upstart Cardinals come from anyway?  These were some of my questions before the 7:05 EST start and I was really primed not to miss a single moment.

My viewing pleasure was to jump between the MLB Network and ESPN so as not to miss a single event from any one game.  Including those not involving the Red Sox, Rays, Braves & Cardinals.  What was happening to the Brewers and Diamondbacks?    And how about MVP ramnifications?  And when the lady of the house phoned to tell me she would not be home until much later (giving me full control of the remote), it made my night.

The games developed as nothing I expected.  The sheer drama, strange twists, unusual circumstances throughout the night made it a magnificent spectacle beyond the expectations of a baseball fan.  It was endearing and gut wrenching at the same time.  I'm not a diehard rooter for any one team, just wanting to see the best of those who were playing, especially those on my 7 fantasy teams allowing me to claim 1st place.  I was successful in 4 of these, mainly because of Napoli, Pujols, Pedroia, Longoria, & Hardy.  Most of my OFers disappeared as managers opted to play newbies.  But I digress.

I was so happy to have been a part of these games as they unraveled, changed, contorted, and then provided their spectacular and unbelievable endings.  I shall never forget this one night which was so full and intriguing for the game of baseball.  It has made the playoffs even more alluring and contentious to those on the teams that made it there.  What a wonderful season.  What a wonderful game.

What was best play of Games 162?

So many great plays last night. I only saw highlights of other games as I watched the Phillies vs Braves. Hunter Pence threw a guy out at home, had a nice game winning season ending hit. The turd Martinez had a great catch in the outfield. Bourn thrown out at 3rd (was really really close, I thought was safe but too close to tell in replay as well). My favorite of the game was watching Atlanta's rookie closer completely collapse in the biggest moment of his career. I was hoping for it, I was talking about it and he delivered...for my phillies. I hope that burns him in the future. Atlanta is a young team but they choked big time. They can only blame themselves. For the fans that say they had no heart, well I been down to Atlanta this season for a few games and well it seemed like there were more of us in the stadium than braves fans and lots of empty chairs. Next year Atlanta will be right back in it they have a real good squad, just wasnt their year.

I cant believe Tampa came back, that was freaking amazing!!!

TURD OF THE YEAR!! Jose Reyes who asked to be taken out of the game after his first hit so he can get the batting title. That truly is pathetic!

I vote for the complete game shutout by Carl Pavano.  Missed in all the glitz and glamor of the Wild Card was a solid pitching performance by a somewhat decent pitcher against an inexperienced cellar dweller.

But seriously, it was all in all one of the better season finishes in quite some time.  We've had a couple of exciting game 163s lately but this was pretty solid.

Wow is right!

The best play was me deciding to watch the games on ESPN (great job by them).

I was jumping back and forth like crazy.

Greatest night of baseball I can remember.

To many to count - but off the top Id have to say Longorias homers that brought the Rays back from the brink, & Andino's 9th inn blast to seal the Red Sox fate. That they happened within 3 min of each other is totally surreal
