Longoria

By Evan Brunell

The morning after baseball's latest contender for the most exciting final day of the regular season, we're left trying to figure out just which of the improbable, impossible events that led to a night to remember was best.

Rays coming back from 7-0? Evan Longoria whacking a three-run home run to pull the Rays within one? How about Dan Johnson, he of a .167 batting average in 260 plate appearances over the last four years jacking a game-tying home run in the ninth? What about Evan Longoria's game winner, shades of Mark McGwire's 62nd home run?

But there were plenty of other memorable plays. How about Robert Andino shocking the Sox with a game-winning single in the ninth? Or earlier in the game, when Dustin Pedroia whacked a homer to give the Sox a lead? The Phillies sending a dagger in the hearts of Braves with a Hunter Pence RBI single in the top 14th? But Craig Kimbrel, he of 40 saves on the year, had to blow the game for Pence to walk off. Similarly, Jonathan Papelbon imploded for the Red Sox, handing Baltimore the victory. The Cardinals razed their way to a 8-0 win, but how huge was St. Louis' five-run first on the strength of five run-scoring hits?

There are no shortage of amazing plays or occurrences from Wednesday night. We ask you: Which one was the best?

What was best play of Games 162?

Jim Dolan, why focus on what happened between the Yankees and the Rays? What about the Red Sox? It is far more likely to worry about the integrity of the game and sport when looking at how the Red Sox obviously just laid down and allowed themselves go get runover by the lowly punk Rays (6 out of the 7 last games) AND the Orioles, just to let the Rays win it all, right? So, which Red Sox players do you think should be banned for life?

Fixed it.

What was best play of Games 162?

wankee fans have to come down to earth, three and out, they look more like the vikings in the second half of a football game.

What was best play of Games 162?

The baseball commissioner suspended several players for life after the White Sox "threw" the 1919 World Series.
Any chance a few of the 2011 NY Yankees will suffer the same fate after "throwing" the last three games to Tampa Bay?
If not, why not? They clearly tried to lose. The integrity of the game and sport is now at risk!

What was best play of Games 162?

I am an avid Yankee fan, but I was in awe of how the Rays played the game, how they could do nothing wrong. It really seemed like they were getting help from the guy up above. It was magical to watch. Great job TB.   Now lets come down to earth.  GO YANKEES...

What was best play of Games 162?

1. Braves pitching to Pence in the 13th with a base open and Michael Martinez in the on-deck circle. Last time I saw a bone head decision like that was way back in 1979 or 1980 when Stan Bahnsen of the Expos pitched to Mike Schmidt with Don McCormack in the on-deck circle.

2. Dan Johnson's 2-out game tying home run. Unbelievable.

3. The Orioles 2-out rally in the bottom of the 9th to defeat the BoSox.

4. The Rays scoring 6 vs. the Yankees' farm system.

5. Pence throwing Prado out at home in the 6th inning.

6. Brett Myers throwing BP to the Cards in the 1st inning.

What was best play of Games 162?

I can understand the homer frenzy, but i really thought the play in Baltimore last night, with Scutaro being thrown out at home, which then lead to the comeback was great. It started with a line drive to deep left field, a diving attempt by Reimold, Scutaro pausing when he thought it was going to be caught, they say he lost the ball, but it didn't matter it froze him for a second, then he headed home, but Jones was backing up and two perfect throws, a catch, a tag by Weiters within a split second of each other.... it made the two out herioics in the bottom of the ninth almost seem inevitable in hindsight. I'm not an Orioles fan, actually a Tigers fan, but watching how all that came together it was one very special 30 minutes.

What was best play of Games 162?

Last night was one of the best nights for baseball in a long time.  You could not have scripted a better ending to the night (unless you are a Red Sox or Braves fan) and get it to come off that well.  All of the teams in the wild card race played to the last out, and even the teams with nothing to gain played well.  MLB can only hope that they have games half as entertaining in the years to come.  Hopefully the young players out there see that if you believe and play till the end, ANYTHING can happen.  The Rays coming back from down 7, that has to be the best moment (or string of moments) from last night.  Everyone thought they were out, except the Rays.  Now lets carry that momentum to Texas and move on to the next round.

What was best play of Games 162?

Wow.  That was the craziest night I ever remember in the MLB regular season.  It should go down in history as "Wild Wednesday".  There have never been so many games in one night with playoff implications, and the wild card race was insane, truly "wild", going down to the 9th or extra innings in many of the games.  And that Tampa Bay comeback?  Crazy stuff.  There are a lot of elated and heartbroken baseball fans around the country today.
