SchaferJordan Schafer of the Astros has been arrested with third-degree felony marijuana possession, the Houston Chronicle writes.

According to a police report, Schafer was pulled over in a 2008 Land Rover with an expired Mississippi license plate after pulling up next to an unmarked police vehicle. (Schafer played in the Braves’ minor league system in Mississippi.)

The report said the driver’s and passenger’s side windows were partially down with a “strong odor of marijuana” coming from the vehicle. Schafer was also said in the report to have a joint in his hand. The police conducted a traffic stop for the expired plate and found a clear plastic bag with a leafy substance that tested positive as marijuana.

The 25.9 grams that the police report claims were in the bag exceed the 20-gram cutoff for felony charges rather than misdemeanor. Schafer also, according to the report, had three marijuana peanut butter cups in the car and claimed ownership of all the drugs.

25.9 grams equates to about 0.9 ounces, which is under the legal limit of one ounce in many states. The arrest came outside the Cheesecake Factory, where he was arrested at 12:28 a.m., and was later released on $2,000 bond. While Schafer didn't give the police his employer, it is no secret he plays for the Astros, coming over in a trade-deadline deal for Michael Bourn. Schafer hit .242/.309/.315 across 337 total plate appearances with 22 stolen bases, missing time with a broken hand.

Schafer was previously suspended 50 games in 2009 for HGH use. He was never tested for it or even found to have purchased it, but enough evidence was gathered by MLB to suspend Schafer, who denied using HGH.

At least the guy owned up to all the stuff being his and didn't try and get out of it by telling the cops he was a ballplayer.  Not the smartest thing to be smokin' and drivin', but the lesson here is to make sure your plates are up to date - not to mention tail lights, inspection, etc.  He was probably perfectly fine to be on the road, but you can't give anyone an excuse to pull you over if you can help it.

Who gices a F, why does CBS even bother making posts on marijuna related incidents, nevermind for players who no ones ever even heard of or cared about. It is easier to drive while on weed. and jordan was doing nothing wrong. LEAGALIZE

2 problems here:

The first is that there are way too many uptight individuals in this country.  Was he smoking and driving?  Or just was caught with an ounce of reefer?  Who cares?  More and more people dying horribly and painfully from cigarettes and alcohol every day.  But then again, those drugs are multibillion dollar industries that pay taxes, as well as contribute millions of dollars to our politicians.
The second is, how can anyone be suspended for HGH when they have not been tested positive?
He will probably get jail time in a back woods state like Mississippi.
It’s a shame.

As an Astros fan, I thought this trade sucked when they made it.  Nobody should ever trade for a player who has a past with drugs.  The fact that he was on the disabled list at the time made it even dumber.  The Astros would have been better off trading Bourn for the marijuana than this worthless player.  The marijuana will last longer.

Well, as a Braves fan, I am not surprised. He never seemed to conduct himself in a very professional manner. At the same time, glad to have Michael Bourn instead of Shafer.

I assume this happened in Texas? I know the Chronicle is reporting but Schafer plays for the Astros and he's their business. I'd like to know for sure which state has a 20-gram felony cutoff for weed possesion so I can avoid going there. No clear dateline = sloppy journalism.

He was suspended for HGH although he was never tested or even proven to make a purchase? How can this be? Jordan weighs about 150lbs soaking wet and he will need to beef up his frame if he wants to be an MLB player of any caliber.

Anyone riding around in their car with an expired license AND smoking weed with the windows down should be arrested for stupidity.

Marijuana peanut butter cups?  I thought Reese's made those.
