Howard, Hamels to undergo surgery

With the Phillies 2011 season coming to a close on a 1-0 loss in Game 5 of the NLCS to the Cardinals, the focus for many players now shifts to getting ready for next season. And for a handful of them, it means having to immediately get some injuries taken care of.

The big one here is first baseman Ryan Howard. He was injured on the final play of Game 5 and an MRI revealed that it's bad news. He has ruptured his left Achilles tendon and will require surgery. He has to wait until the swelling goes down before the surgery and there's no timetable for his recovery until the procedure has been completed. The official line from the Phillies is that "there is no guarantee he will be ready for spring training." A reasonable expectation is about six months, which gets us into April, depending upon when Howard has the surgery. And what if there are setbacks? And whenever Howard's injury is healed enough to allow him to resume baseball activities, he'd then have to work his way into game shape. So this is already an issue for the 2012 season.

Starting pitcher Cole Hamels is also going to go under the knife. Twice. First, he's going to have "loose bodies" removed from his left (throwing) elbow on Oct. 14. Then, a week later, he's going to have surgery to repair a inguinal hernia. Expect Hamels to be ready come mid-February, though, as these aren't serious procedures like Howard is going to have.

There are more, too.

Right fielder Hunter Pence is going to have an MRI on his sports hernia to evaluate the severity of the injury. A course of action will be determined after the results of the MRI are known.

Third baseman Placido Polanco is also going to have an MRI on his sports hernia, and the Phillies report surgery is likely.

Bench player Ross Gload will have his hip injury examined, but is likely to undergo arthroscopic surgery.

You must not have watched the game then.  The ball was foul, as showed by numerous replays afterwards.  J-Roll was getting ready to break into stride when the ball clearly bounced foul.  A bad call by both the 1st base and home plate umpires.

Blame Charlie Manuel.   No business even letting Cardinals in the playoffs.  They should have played season out until final week and then rested the starters.  How many times do you see the so called HOT team win it all.  Happens alot.  Too bad Philly doesn't have a Joe Torre or Phil Jackson type of head coach that can get talent to win!!!!

Howard, Hamels to undergo surgery

For the not so bright people out there I will spell it out.  Howard takes more criticism, much like A Rod in NY, because he's paid an obscene amount of money to do one thing, drive in runs.  Also, much like A Rod, he has had 1 good post season and it just so happens the Phillies won a world series that year.  Coincidence? Three years ago he struck out 50% of the time in the world series.  Last year he set a record for Ks and also managed to not drive in a single run in the series against the Giants.  This year he managed two whole hits and might as well not have come to the plate in the last 3 games.  Like it or not when he accepted the mega-contract  (which by the way was based on performance he has not come even remotely close to matching since he signed it) he also accepted the heightened scrutiny that comes along with it.  People see him flailing at pitches a foot out of the strike zone, swinging on 3-0 pitches in a 1 run game, and refusing to even consider going the opposite way despite a shift that makes pulling a ball on the ground virtually an automatic out and what are they supposed to say?  He's trying? Gee, last time I checked everyone was "trying" it's a matter of combining effort with preparation, and execution.  At this point it only looks like Howard is dispalying one of the three elements necessary for success.

Frankly, this is even more reason why our brain dead idiot at the helm needs to go.

Earlier in the game, Rollins hit a ground ball to first and chose not to run, guessing it was foul. It was fair and of course he was out by 90 feet. But since he didnt make the last out of the game, we will forgive and forget.

I am not a Phillies fan by any stretch of the imagination but I have a feeling that Howard would choose not to tear his achilles.  My God people he hit a grounder and busted out of the box to try and hustle it out and ripped his achilles.  Had he not you would be killing him for loafing it out of the box.  The Phils didn't score a run...hard to blame Howard for one at bat.

WOW!  Phils fans are dumber than I thought..  Just because Howard made the last out, he is the goat and he is to blame.  There was no one on base. What about the other 7 offensive players who didn't score or drive in a run all game.  You are crying out for Pujols? What did Pujols do in that all important game 5? Nothing! Struck out. Took an oh fer. So it is posssible that if the phils had Pujols instead of Howard, they would have lost that game as well.

Did you forget that Howard drove in 800 runs in the past 6 seasons. Phils offense is what needs improvement, so your solution is to get rid of your biggest run producer and the best run producer in the game?

Let's improve!!

Hope the Phillies make a run for a first baseman who doesn't choke in big games. Let's say someone like.....Pujols!?  The guy is a machine! Go get 'em Phillies and improve your team dramatically! If only Howard had one or two more hits, we would have won the series. The clean up hitter can't leave that many guys on base game after game after game!!  Go get someone who can play the game under pressure!

I think we should look for a hitting coach.  AGAIN!!!  If we happen to find a good one, we might solve most of our problems.
