White Sox considered Konerko for manager job

Within the past few weeks, the White Sox let manager Ozzie Guillen go and then hired former third baseman Robin Ventura to be the new manager. We knew this. What we didn't know is who exactly general manager Kenny Williams considered for a manager before eventually deciding on Ventura. One name he considered is a shocker: First baseman Paul Konerko.

Yes, current first baseman Paul Konerko. Williams told reporters Tuesday he mulled it over and decided he'd rather Konerko just focus on playing -- also noting he never spoke to Konerko about the thought (Scott Merkin via Twitter).

White Sox coverage
The Ventura hire was very unpopular in the Chicago media, so I can't imagine the uproar this would have caused. There hasn't been a player-manager since Pete Rose did so for the Reds back from 1984-86.

Konerko, 35, is a five-time All-Star and a great baseball man. He's played in the majors since 1997 and has been with the White Sox since 1999. There's no question he eventually be an asset in the dugout for someone as a coach or manager, if he wants to take that path with his post-playing career. But there's a reason there hasn't been a player-manager for 25 years. Being a player and being a manager are two entirely different full-time jobs and giving one man both of those is just too much.

In fairness to Williams, "considering" someone and thinking seriously about hiring him are not synonymous. It's just amusing Konerko was even a consideration -- and quite the compliment to the veteran as well.

So if Konerko was coach and wanted to make a visit to the mound, would he just walk over from 1st base?  And if he did this twice in an inning would he have to remove the pitcher?

who cares if he can't fight. smart guy and a stand up dude. think he will do well. How hard is it to manage in the a.l. anyway? Take a look at some of these managers in the league now. Ventura probably in top ten already.

I don't understand the issue the fans have with Ventura.  The guy knows baseball back and forward.  I know he gets villainized for losing in his attempt to defend himself against a Nolan Ryan intentional beanball, but what does thathave to do with anything?  I used to think the Whirte Sox had the more-knowledgable fans in the city, I shall have to reconsider.

I think the Jim Thome trade was a steal for them.. gave up Aaron Rowand and a very young and not ready Gio Gonzales. Thome had very solid years for the White Sox. Carlos Quentin has not been a horrible pickup by any means. Other than Jake Peavy and so far Adam Dunn not working out I think his moves are very aggressive and I would rather have an aggressive GM that misses than one that sits on a team for 6 yrs and does nothing. You could always root for the Astros, they might be good in 2018, might!

White Sox considered Konerko for manager job

I love my White Sox but Kenny has hit his head on the curb.  He went from one extreme with Ozzie to the other with Ventura.  Robin was a very nice player for the Sox but to think he has the knowledge and foresite to be a manager in the big leagues at this stage in his life is a bit short sided.  I will watch and hope that my conclusions are wrong

I can still remember when Ventura rushed the mound and got his a$$ handed to him by Nolan Ryan. Ahh... good times...

"Did Kenny Williams lose his mind?"

Thinking back, when was the last great trade that really worked out for the White Sox???  I really like parts of this team, but overall it's just not worth it to be a fan.

A pitcher with solid knowledge would make a great player-manager. You play every 5th day so you aren't worried about your position all the time. Let your batting coach fill in the holes that you may be missing.
