Alex Avila, who broke out as one of the best catchers in the game this season, revealed that he sprained his left knee in July.

"I have tendinitis," he told the Detroit Free-Press. "I don't think I have any ligament damage."

The Avila4-year-old's right leg also gave Avila trouble, as it buckled under the pressure of compensating for the left knee. After hitting .295/.389/.506 for the season, he slumped in October and collected just two hits in 25 at-bats, driving in one run. Avila's struggles were a major reason the Tigers lost in the ALCS, especially as he wasn't able to lengthen the lineup in the absence of Magglio Ordonez.

"He never once complained," starter Justin Verlander said.

Avila had a MRI on Sunday, but the results haven't come back yet. The diagnosis of tendinitis is expected to be confirmed. At that point, he will rest for a month, then begin a workout routine to get ready for spring training.

"I will be as good as new," he said.

Alex Avila reveals sprained knee in July

All right all ready...they made a 'typo' ! I think you are aware Avila is 24 years old, so go with the article !  It was obvious to me (having watched nearly every game0 that Avila was just not right in the post season.  The wear and tear really took its' toll, and his legs weren't there. I knew it because he has developed a beautiful swing that just wasn't there, but also for another reason. On at least 2 occasions announcers talked of his lack of speed on the basepaths. I know, possibly the ONLY two times he was on base ! That was not the case during the season...he was the fastest catcher I witnessed all year. Perhaps that idea of him playing some third base should be looked at again for next year ??

I am thinking the pressure of starting school in September may have also had an impact on the 4 year old's fall slump.

At that age, sign him to a 20 year deal before the Yankees can get him, by age 13 or 14 we can move him to first base once his knees are in real bad shape and still have him for some prime hitting years!!!
