Bud Selig said Thursday playoff expansion could still happen as soon as 2012, and also that he is worried about the attendance in Tampa Bay, as MLB's commissioner spoke to Christopher Russo on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Radio.

"I have, if we can work all the details out, as it's part of the labor negotiations, I have hope that the wild card thing -- if we can work it out -- is ready for next year," Selig said.

When asked if he was optimistic that it could be agreed upon in time to be implemented for 2012, Selig said he was "optimistic" and that the deal would have to be done by Thanksgiving.

As for the Rays, Selig was less optimistic. He was asked about owner Stu Sterberg's postseason letter to season ticket holders saying he was worried about the team's attendance.

"I like (owner) Stu Sternberg a lot, as you know. I have a great deal of respect for him. He's a very thoughtful, very interesting guy, done a great job there, done a brilliant job there," Selig said (via the St. Petersburg Times). "I, too, am concerned about their attendance. I track attendance every day. He knows it. I've talked to him a lot. They are a wonderful organization, produced a terrific team this year and finished last in the American League in attendance. I'll let you draw your own conclusion. That's bad."

Selig was asked if the stadium situation in Tampa Bay was a "lost cause."

"I can't answer that yet, but I'm usually an optimist and I don't have any reason to be too optimistic," Selig said.

Orlando's mayor spoke to the city's ABC affiliate, WFTV, and was asked if he would be receptive to the Rays relocating to Orlando.

"I'd certainly answer, and I'd want to explore that opportunity," Buddy Dyer said (via the Tampa Tribune).

He also said, "I think Major League Baseball could do better in Orlando." But Dyer said he'd really like an NFL team (good luck).

However, Dyer said he wouldn't negotiate with the Rays unless negotiations in the Tampa Bay area failed and a spokesperson told the Tribune that Orlando has made no effort to lure the Rays.

Selig also said instant replay could be expanded to include fair and foul balls, but not other plays. He also said he may have to decide what kind of compensation the Red Sox get from the Cubs for Theo Epstein.

I agree w/ callmzeke!  If they had done it this year, then the Red Sox amd Braves would of already been in the playoffs and those games we saw on the last day would not of mattered and would of only been to decide Home field advantage for a 1 game playoff!! Leave the game alone Selig!! You are leaving anyway! He is trying to leave some last minute marks on the game to add to his legacy. It's the same kind of BS thinking that Bush had his last couple of years in office, worrying more about how he will be remembered in historically.

I would like him to first explain how a Wild Card has had the home field advantage for the past two years.  And I don't want to hear about the All-Star game playing a part because it shouldn't.  When he can find a good answer to that, then I'd like to hear about an additional Wild Card.

Rays did not finish last in attendance in the AL the A's did. So I guess Selig doesnt check the attendance that closely. Also if you look at the TV ratings average in MLB the Rays were in the Top 5 in 2010 and in the Top 10 in 2011. The interest is there for the rays, they need to get mor corprate companies involved (Like The Seminole Indians). They cant expect a lrge walk up crowd every game in a 70% transplant population area. They need more season ticket increases and more companies invovled would do that....

How does Bud Selig help the game by adding more wild card teams?  If there were two wild cards per-league this year, the awesome pennant race we had at the end in both leagues would have been drained of drama.

Besides, the way the Red Sox and Braves played down the home stretch in September, they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs.  The Rays and Cardinals made the post-season in dramatic fashion, and one of them even made it to the World Series.  Selig should leave well-enough alone.  Keep things the way they are.

And why should he have any part in deciding what compensation Chicago gives Boston for Theo Epstein?  Seems like that should be a matter strictly between the Cubs and Red Sox organizations.  Selig should go on vacation for a month or so, and keep his meddling hands off of the game for awhile.

i think the playoffs are fine the way it is. Its just enough to let best teams in. increasing it and you will get mediocre teams in constantly in the playoffs. Plus i would only want this if they shortened the season and at least had a 5 game playoffs for this new round
