Could Big Papi be headed north of the border?

The Boston Herald writes that the Blue Jays "will not rule out" going after David Ortiz.

The Red Sox slugger is a free agent, coming off a bounceback year that saw him crack 29 homers and hit .309/.398/.554. While Ortiz isn't expected to get a lucrative contract, especially at age 35, he should end up with a two-year deal worth around $20-$25 million in free agency. That is well within Toronto's budget, which is looking for a left-handed complement to Jose Bautista. Ortiz would certainly fit the bill and give the club some serious thump in advance of the team trying to make a move in the division.

Ortiz knows the Blue Jays manager, John Farrell, from his time in Boston as a pitching coach and has always enjoyed Rogers Centre, where the Jays call home. Excluding Boston's Fenway Park, the lefty has slugged more homers in Rogers Centre than any other stadium, going deep 29 times and slashing .270/.357/.597 in the park. However, again, Ortiz is 35 and that might not fit with Toronto, whose window of opportunity is likely at least one more year away. Plus, Papi would be stuck at DH and prevent Toronto from cycling other players through the position. In addition, it would mean that one of Adam Lind, Travis Snider and Eric Thames would be squeezed out of playing time.

After the Red Sox's historic collapse, Ortiz was quoted as saying he was tired of dealing with the drama in Boston, but later said he wanted to return to the team. It's likely that he will, and new GM Ben Cherington said that he wouldn't rule out Papi re-upping with Boston during the five-day window of exclusivity teams have with their free agents following the World Series.

Blue Jays could make run at David Ortiz

Sure, I hope the Jays offer him 25M$ for 2 years.Ortiz will be 36 in November, & although he's listed at 230 Lbs, he already has a hard time walking to first on ground balls. In fact it take's him about the same amount of time to touch all 4 than to trot to first on a walk or ground out.By spring this guy will be 250+(if he isn't already). If he does sign with the Jays, will they be as patient with him when he hit's .200 the first 2 months of the year.(I'm not counting 2011;David had his own agenda.

I love how he threw the Red Sux under the bus......Can you imagine of he signs back with the Red Sux? He wanted to be with a class organization like the Yankees! LOL

Blue Jays could make run at David Ortiz

Now my predictions of late have been less than good: (1)Wisconsin for the National Championship, (2) Tigers vs Brewers WS and (3) Packers to repeat, and (4) the Shenanigans to be ran out of Washington! Two could still happen though.
But this is just the lame-brain, knee jerk decision the Red Sox would make, let him go to a fellow AL East team so he can make us suffer for evermore!
Oi! RED SOX! NO! BIG PAPI STAYS!!!!!!OK!!!!

The Blue Jays keep pushing me toward the Sounders. I swear, I'm eventually going to just stop caring.

Blue Jays could make run at David Ortiz

This article came out of Boston and that says it all. There is no way that Alex Anthopoulous would spend 10 million per year on David Ortiz when he could get similar production for 3 or 4 million. He is a great guy, but he can't do anything except for DH, and guys who can still hit but can't field are a dime a dozen. Take Edwin Encarnacion for example. I was likely more against him than any Jays fan in the world at the beginning of last year, but keep him off of 3rd base, and he was the Jays 3rd best hitter on the season in a lot of ways. Plus Cherington stated today that they wanted Papi to finish his career there. The biggest reason this doesn't happen though is because Ortiz's idea of what he's worth, and how the Jays will evaluate him will have a tremendous difference.

Blue Jays could make run at David Ortiz

did you miss the first line of the article that described his bounceback year?  I'd take him last year, no doubt.  Although, at age 35, the Jays would be assuming a large risk given the author's example of a two-year, 20-25 million dollar contract demand.  Investing that much into an older player can certainly backfire, think Frank Thomas times 1000 if he fails.

i think 2 yrs and 20 to 25 million is  pretty lucrative....especially for a 35 yr old DH
