Adam WainwrightBy C. Trent Rosecrans

We're going to have a lot of these reports in the next couple of days -- the things you knew would happen, but actually happened. Today's edition is that the Cardinals officially told right-hander Adam Wainwright they are picking up his 2012 and 2013 options at a total of $21 million, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wainwright recorded the final out of the 2006 World Series for the Cardinals, but has been relegated to cheerleader in this year's World Series. Wainwright missed all of 2011 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but is expected to be fully ready to pitch come spring training.

Wainwright, 30, finished in the top three in Cy Young voting in both 2009 and 2010, going 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA in 2010.

With the option picked up for $9 million in 2012, the Cardinals already have more than $74 million on the books for 10 players in 2012, with Albert Pujols unsigned. The team also has an option on shortstop Rafael Furcal, while Jason Motte, Mitchell Boggs and Ryan Theriot are all arbitration-eligiible. Right-hander Edwin Jackson, catcher Gerald Laird, infielder Nick Punto and outfielder Corey Patterson are also free agents.

Cardinals pick up Adam Wainwright's option

You people realize that Pujols didn't bat .300 until SEPT 16th, right???  Lance Berkman essentially carried the entire team through July.  Will the Cards survive without Pujols.  Of course.  And aside from one monster World Series game, Pujols in his career has literally done nothing in the World Series either.  His best years are gone.  If we can keep for something remotely reasonable like $20 MM per year, fine.  But 25+ they need to let him walk and wish him the best.

That's funny cco22inf I heard that same thing this year.  We Cardinal fans were delusional, insane, and silly to boot to think we had a chance this year when Wainright went down for the season.  Our best hope was to finish third!  Wow, now we are in game seven of the World Series.  I hope we keep Pujols, but the world will not end if we do not.  Go Cards!!

Great news for next Year . But lets talk about now .Last night Unbelievable game. This is one for the ages. The Cardinals have been Warriors all year. Now with the Rain out we have Carp for 2 or 3 innings. Then Jackson Im guessing then whatever bullpen we have left. Should not play Loshe because this Texas Team will light him up. We should take the owness off our pitching tonight and try to score 7 runs and that will be that. Baseball at its best. Fighting till the last out both Teams.  Hurry up tonight lets start this battle. and those of you puttting down Texas are wrong. I dont see any other American League Team in World Series last two Years. Why not give props to Cards and leave it at that

A good and wise move by the Cardinals . especially if Wainwright returns to his old form.

Cardinals pick up Adam Wainwright's option

The Cardinals took a chance and signed a guy for 2 years coming off surgery, knowing he wouldn't even play the first year, and it worked out pretty well- Chris Carpenter.  I admire the Cardinals ability to put their checkbook where most teams lip-service loyalty lies.

I'm suprized at the Wainwright option- only because I wasn't aware the Busch familiy operated a U.S. Mint in St. Louis....where they will have to print new currency for the payroll of the Cardinals....Holliday, Carpenter, Berkman, Molina, and now Wainwright...and they're talking about a quarter of a BILLION dollars for Pujols...

I assume they also have budget for 19 more players and a batboy in there too ?  Payroll at $175 million ? No wonder they sold Budweiser...they'll need the proceeds to pay this team....

Think they'll still have money left to continue buying a new DP combo and a couple of pitchers every year, for the playoff push against the rest of the NLC's "Little Sisters of the Poor" ?

Why would either side (especially ownership) renegotiate?!?!?
30M for 2 years no doubt is the going rate for someone of Wainwright's accomplishments.  However, to assume a 30 yr old coming off TJ surgery is going to continue his dominance is somewhat risky.  The Cardinals FO was between a rock and a hard spot.
