Matt Holliday removed from World Series roster

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals All-Star left fielder Matt Holliday will not play in Game 7 of the World Series. He's been replaced on the World Series roster by rookie Adron Chambers. Expect Allen Craig to get the start in left field for St. Louis.

Holliday said Thursday night that he was hoping to play in Game 7, but obviously things looked worse Friday when he woke up. The interesting thing here is that Thursday night Holliday's announced injury was a severely bruised right pinky finger. Friday, the Cardinals announced he's been removed from the official World Series roster due to a sprained right wrist. Still, everything could have easily happened on that one play -- when Holliday was picked off third base by Rangers catcher Mike Napoli. The biggest issue was said to be whether or not he could properly grip a bat, so obviously he can't.

If you're wondering how this move can be made right now, here's why, directly from the press release: "MLB Postseason rules provide that injured players can be replaced during the World Series if the severity of the injury, as determined by Major League Baseball, is such that it would require a disabled list assignment during the regular season."

Holliday is hitting .158 with no RBI this World Series, though he has drawn enough walks to rack up a .385 on-base percentage and five runs scored. Craig is 4-for-15 (.267), but those four hits were all huge. He has two home runs and two go-ahead, RBI singles. Chambers is nothing more than bench depth at this point.

Matt Holliday removed from World Series roster

i agree it definitely sucks, love the game 6 really enjoyed it, it would be a better game if Matt Holiday plays, can't he put a brace on that pinkie and give it a go, it is the World Series and the final game, what i would not give to play even if i am injured. But knowing Tony La Russa he does not force players to play, hopefully Allen Craig is on his A game.

Good old fashioned baseball.  Clearly on camera, his left hand was very close to the bag.  That made his slide legal and it reminded me of the hard nosed way baseball was played when I was growing up.   It made me think of Pete Rose.

I you have the ball or are just about to catch the ball, it is legal to block the base.  However from the right field camera angle, his hand got to the base a little bit before the tag anyway.  So the umpire was wrong, but that kind of judgment call cannot be fixed.  I was irritated at am experienced player straying off the base that far.

Bad Call on Holliday Pick-Off

I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but why do all the media outlets have stories praising Beltre for his great play while blocking third base with his foot?  It was an illegal play, specifically obstruction, and the correct call was to award Holliday a free base.  The only base that may be blocked in any manner is home plate.

It was a smart play in that he got the blatantly wrong call made in his favor and injured an opponent to the point where he left the game and won't play against the Rangers again this season.  However, the play should be praised in about the same manner that McGuire, Sosa, Bonds and others should be praised for their dignified, intelligent and virtuous use of steriods.

You're wrong.  You don't have to slide at the base.. and as long as you're sliding and not still upright you can raise your arms.  By rule the player sliding into 2nd base needs to be within arms reach of the base, whether or not he actually reaches for the base, he only needs to be within reach.  This is text book baseball 101.  You are taught to go in hard and take out the 2nd baseman/shortstop from an early age.  Holliday did this to perfection last night.  He did EXACTLY as he was taught.

Matt Holliday Slide Illegal

Holliday slid at the fielder and not the base and also raised his arm to flip the fielder, both of those events should have been an out call at first base.  Yet, with these umps who knows what they would call.  Maybe they should start the game by giving the Cards 4 outs and the Rangers 2 outs and call a fair game after the first inning.

They have to be hurt, determined by the MLB. Hurt bad enough that it would require them to go to the DL if it were the regular season. READ THE ARTICLE. GEES!!
