Starting pitcher Derek Lowe has been traded by the Braves to the Indians, the Braves announced Monday afternoon.

Lowe is set to make $15 million in 2011, but Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com has learned that the Braves will pay $10 million of that. In return, the Braves will get Chris Jones, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher. Jones was 7-1 with a 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings for High-A Kinston this past season.

According to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, Jones has average velocity but a "good breaking ball and tons of deception." Goldstein further says that left-handers "can't touch" Jones and he's a possible left-handed specialist out of the bullpen.

Lowe, 38, was 9-17 with a 5.05 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 187 innings. He's a two-time All-Star, but hasn't been really good for a full season since 2008 with the Dodgers. He has been good in stretches for the Braves, most notably September of 2010, when he was 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA.

Derek Lowe traded to Indians

Thats 3 young prospects that cleveland gave away this year.  That makes no sense ecspecially for a 38 year old, they better be in the sweepstakes for puljos or fieldser

Yes! ATL just got paid 5 million to let him go. Even if he was pitching well, there was no room for the 38 year old.

"Am I missing something?"

Nope.  Also, the Tribe, as is, won't provide much run support.  Maybe the front office would say, well, we have a good bullpen.  He'll put the pen to work, that's for sure.  Or, maybe they just like bargains, getting a $15 million pitcher for $5.  Anyway, I hope it works for the Tribe.

I don't know much about Jones, but why would the Indians even consider adding Lowe to their starting rotation?  At the risk of sounding too critical, he was absolutely terrible for about the last half of the season and has clearly lost most of what made him good for so many years.  At 38 years old, Lowe is obviously not the pitcher he once was.  It baffles me why the Indians, who have developed so much young talent of late, would want someone like Lowe.  He will go between 3-5 innings on every start with an ERA of 6.00 or greater and a WHIP of about 1.80 - 2.10.  I spoke to a life-long Indians fan who feels exactly the same way.  Am I missing something?

Nothing says strong rotation like having two starters (Lowe and Carmona) with ERA's over 5!

Derek Lowe traded to Indians

Here's an idea.  Let's trade all of our good young pitching prospects for old national league pitchers who stink, and will stink more in the american league.  Then we can lose enough games to get high draft picks.  Then we can draft more young pitchers to trade in the future.  How about getting  some outfielders who can hit the ball out of the yard.  Come on Indians, get your s*** together.  Just like the Browns......always rebuilding.

The Braves should have included Minor and Beachy in the deal for Jiminez. We need another solid starter. Minor and Beachy were younger versions of Lowe this year. Together they may give you ten wins! Next years rotation: Hudson, Hanson, Jurrgens, Medlin, and Delgado.

Indians did nothing last offseason so I guess this is better than nothing and were just getting started. Indians need to sign some hitting. Outfield for Cleveland is looking weak.

A good trade for the Braves and a long time coming. Lowe is way past his prime and getting him out of the way can open up oppurtunities for our younger pitchers. Goodbye, Derek Lowe; we won't miss your 5 inning games or your 5.05 ERA.
Great!

So Cleveland will get 4 innings & an 8-9 point ERA!

Is Lowe realated to Kerry Woods by chance?

LOL!
