Starting pitcher Derek Lowe has been traded by the Braves to the Indians, the Braves announced Monday afternoon.

Lowe is set to make $15 million in 2011, but Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com has learned that the Braves will pay $10 million of that. In return, the Braves will get Chris Jones, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher. Jones was 7-1 with a 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings for High-A Kinston this past season.

According to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, Jones has average velocity but a "good breaking ball and tons of deception." Goldstein further says that left-handers "can't touch" Jones and he's a possible left-handed specialist out of the bullpen.

Lowe, 38, was 9-17 with a 5.05 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 187 innings. He's a two-time All-Star, but hasn't been really good for a full season since 2008 with the Dodgers. He has been good in stretches for the Braves, most notably September of 2010, when he was 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA.

LOL, we knew the Braves were idiots to giving Lowe the contract they did, but now they'll be paying him to suck in another city on top of that. I love it!

A 38 year-old starting pitcher. guess we already know how serious the Indians are for 2012 success. What a bummer and it's not even Novemeber yet. Will this ownership ever get serious?  I doubt it - truly!!

I realize the Braves were anxious to get rid of him (as evident by them paying $10 mil to do so) but the AL is not a good fit for an aged sinkerball pitcher with an inflated ERA over the past few years.

There was much rejoicing in Braves Country.  Lowe and McClouth gone on the same day.  It's a Halloween miracle!

Probably the best $10 million the Braves will spend this off-season. If only they would have pitched him exclusively in September.....

So the Tribe will have Derek BLOWE and Fausto CARM-OH-NO starting 40% of their games? What is this, "Major League," where the owners WANT to lose? Is Charlie Sheen coming out otf the bullpen?
