Yankees plan to talk to C.J. Wilson

By Matt Snyder

In a very thin crop of free agent pitchers, C.J. Wilson is the best of the bunch. And while the high-spending Yankees did have the best record in the American League, the last few spots of their rotation would appear to be a weakness moving forward (yes, the offense is aging and will likely regress a bit, but those guys are all locked in contractually). So it's not much of a surprise that the Yankees have Wilson on their radar.

“We haven’t talked to him yet, but we will,” said general manager Brian Cashman (New York Post). “[The Rangers] have won a lot and he’s been a big part of that, so we’ll certainly talk to him.”

And here's the thing worth noting: If the Yankees decide they definitely want Wilson, they'll surely get him. They can outpay anyone (unless the Nationals really wanna get crazy) and Wilson doesn't seem married to any particular destination. Being left-handed also makes him a great fit in Yankee Stadium.

Wilson, 30, was 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 206 strikeouts in 223 1/3 innings during the 2011 regular season, making his first All-Star team. He did have a poor postseason showing, but Cashman told the Post he's not worried about that.

Yankees plan to talk to C.J. Wilson

Yanks didn't win, so they are going to try and buy another championship. SALARY CAP PLEASE!!
This coming from a Cowboys & Red Sox fan? That's hilarious. Isn't that what Boston did? Lackey,Crawford,Gonzalez,JD Drew,Dice k?

If Wilson signs on with The Yankees, The Red Sox can go back to the basement. Tampa, Toronto, Baltimore and all there young talent are going to take over the AL East.

Yankees plan to talk to C.J. Wilson

CJ "I'm not really a dimwit, but I might look and act like one" Wilson will make the Barry Zito contract look like a good deal for the Giants. Wilson is an unproven and violatile pitcher who cannot handle pitching in big games and handle himself with dignity, class and charisma.

His face has the words "I'm getting pawned by life" written all over it.

Avoid this guy like the plague and go after Mark Buehrle! He pitched one no hitter and a perfect game....something no current Yankee has ever done!!!
And he is a lot better than AJ Burnett in many of which is you....can...never.....have...enoug

I'm hoping that the A's sign Buehrle instead. I also am hoping that Pujols and Fielder also join the team. Most importantly, I'm hoping that the SF Giants will stop acting like a child and give the rights to San Jose BACK to Oakland. Last I checked....Oakland was a lot closer to San Jose than San Francisco. I understand that the Giants claimed territorial rights to San Jose when they were struggling as a franchise and was trying to grab a pice of Oakland's fan base in the hopes of remaining solvent. The generous (although some might say they were naive in giving up the rights to San Jose without a fight/tussle/thumb-wrestling match) A's did not say a thing when the Giants asserted their rights to San Jose. It just so happens that a Giants minor league franchise suddenly appear in San Jose...which is the basis of the Giants claim.

"We have a minor league team in San Jose so in effect we own San Jose...Take that you losers!"

Were the Giants referring to the A's or the citizens of San Jose?

The people of San Jose have voted twice to give aproval to the A's to move to San Jose. San Jose even gave the A's a very good lease on a property that is tailor made for a baseball park and entertainment complex.

The people of San Jose never voted to approve of a Giants move to San Jose....I wonder why!

Was it because the Giants are not as loveable and endeared by fans everywhere as they claim to be?
Probably! The last A's-Giants game I attended last year was in Oakland and it was terrible. I was being harassed by a bunch of drunken 20 something girls wearing tramp stamps who were also cussing at 10 year old kids for chanting "Let's go A's". If I didn't know any better I thought they were Oakland Raider fans! Yikes!

Oh, miked5405, your a tigers fan. yowsa , they are a good team, but wont last, be back in the basement soon..
Detroit added Fister at the trade deadline, giving them a rotation of Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Porcello and next year probably Jacob Turner -- That means the oldest pitcher on the Tigers will be Verlander at 28 and all of them are under contract thru 2014.

Cabrera, VMart, AJax, Avila, Boesch are all under contract till 2014.  Cabrera is just now going to be hitting his prime -- He is only 28.  Detroit will be set for the next 3 or 4 years.  I'm sure we will be seeing the Yankees a couple times in that time period and I'm sure we will knock them out of the playoffs again, just like 2006 and 2011.  I'm sure we will listen to the NY fans scream about 27 championships, just like the last two times we knocked them out.

In the end -- I honestly don't dislike the Yankees.  I don't dislike the majority of their fans.  I just dislike the fans that want to talk about championships from 80 years ago, like they were at the games rooting the team on.

All I was trying to say in this thread is -- I have no idea how Cashman gets an extension, when he can basically field an all-star team with the payroll he has available to spend, yet NY has one World Series in the last 11 years.  As one yankee fan stated in this thread -- NY is always in a win now mode.  If that is the case -- Cashman hasn't done too well in that mode recently.  Why give him an extension?

for me, it isn't being anti-yankee -- i just hate the fans who continue to say, 'talk to me when you have won 27 championships'.  when i remind them they have won only 1 in the last 11 years -- they go right to talking about winning 27 championships.
Sorry, I'm not really the type of Yankee fan that brings up the whole "27 rings" argument.  I wasn't alive for most of those championships so I really don't care about things that happened 80 years ago.  If other Yankee fans want to bring up that argument, I'm not going to stop them since this is a message board.

Thanks for proving my point about obsessing over the Yankee payroll though.  You're telling us things we already know....the Yankees have spent a lot of money over the years and Cashman has made some bonehead moves as well.  The payroll is what it is, Yankee fans don't control how much the team chooses to spend.

I like what Cashman has done with the farm system as much as you want to bash him for his bad free agent signings.  The Yankees have some highly touted pitchers (Banuelos, Betances,) that are going to be starting in AAA next year and hopefully will end up making an impact in the major leagues sooner than later.   Jesus Montero, who hopefully can develop as a catcher, is going to be a stud in the Yankee lineup for years to come.  Hopefully Cashman keeps this kid around because I think he is the real deal.

swisher -- free agency.
Wrong.  Swisher was not a free agent.  He was part of a trade with the White Sox in the 08 offseason.  If you're going to bash the Yankees, at least get your facts straight before you post.

Who's this Yankee fan talking trash?

As a life-long Ranger fan, I advise you to take a look in the mirror.
