Dykstra a no-show in fight against Canseco

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The only thing worse than paying to see the Lenny Dykstra-Jose Canseco slapfest on pay-per-view? Paying for it and one of the contestants pulling out.

Dykstra, the former Met and Phillie, pulled out of Saturday's scheduled boxing match with Canseco despite being paid $5,000 cash, according to Dan Gross of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Promotor Damon Feldman told the newspaper that he paid Dykstra on Thursday and was scheduled to give him another $10,000 after the fight. Dykstra then told promoters at 6 p.m. on Saturday that he wasn't going to show.

Gross reached Dykstra on his cell phone, but Dykstra said he'd call Gross back and didn't -- nor did he respond to text messages.

Gross also wrote he talked to a "friend of Dykstra's" who said Dykstra had never signed on to fight Canseco, nor did he receive any money. However, Dykstra tweeted about fighting Canseco and re-tweeted several well-wishers urging him on against the former A's slugger.

Canseco had been scheduled to fight Tareq Salahi, the White House party crasher, but Salahi pulled out and was replaced by Dykstra -- allegedly.

It seemed like a bad idea from the beginning, two disgraced stars fighting each other and a nation ignoring it. Or, this could be some elaborate hoax to drum up more interest in the fight at a later date. Either way, it's sad and a little pathetic.

Too bad Dykstra didn't have a twin brother he could send in his place.

Dykstra a no-show in fight against Canseco

I actually went to one of Mr Feldman's promoted boxing shows at the Spectrum on October 11th 2002. Ivan Robinson (man who had Feud of the year with Arturo Gatti back in 98) fought Philly local "Chucky T" and he was clearly outclassing poor Chuck. But guess who won on the scorecards? If you guessed Chucky T you'd be correct. I actually met Mr Feldman one time when I was considering training to be a pro wrestler (I have my head on straight now don't worry lol), and he was nice enough for the one time I met him. He did promote a few Wrestling cards in the Philly suburbs starring ECW alumni The Sandman and The Rockin Rebel (who was the trainer for the promotion/wrestling school I talked to). But yeah he does have a history of rigging fights with not just celebrities but with Pro Boxers as well.

And yeah, as a buisnessman I thought Feldman would have more common sense than to give The Dude any kind of advance. Story sounds fishy to me.

Dykstra a no-show in fight against Canseco

Maybe I'm nuts, but I had no idea Canseco vs. Dykstra could draw more than friends and family to even watch the fight.

Bum Fights Nothing New

The scheduled bum fight between dykstra and canseco is really nothing new.  Promoters pay bums ten bucks each to have a slugfest in alleys so they can film it for their friends at a later date.  These just happen to be top of the line bums getting more than they deserve for a bum fight.

Dykstra a no-show in fight against Canseco

Who would pay Dykstra in advance for anything???!! Consider that $5,000 gone. Is there a more judgement-proof moron you could possibly sue? Serves you right.
