Mercurial starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano's 2011 season ended August 12 when he departed the Cubs' locker room early and told some people he was retiring. The fallout: The Cubs basically suspended him for the season and are now likely ready to part ways with him for pretty much anything in return. But he does have talent, despite a ridiculously high salary (he's due $19 million in 2012), so it shouldn't come as a surprise that some general managers believe he may be worth the risk. Count Royals' GM Dayton Moore as one of them.

"We would have to be interested. We would have to explore it because that's what you should do. You should explore every opportunity. Carlos Zambrano is a heckuva competitor," said Moore ( "Carlos Zambrano has had a lot of success in the major leagues. Carlos Zambrano is actually a very pleasant, easy going, classy person off the field. Sometimes, as with all of us the competitiveness takes over and brings out qualities in us that we are not proud of. Obviously the Cubs grew tired of some of his outbursts but I believe in our coaching staff and we'll always take a chance and a risk on certain players. We'll see how that particular situation unfolds."

Hot Stove Season
Zambrano, 30, is a three-time All-Star who has thrice finished fifth in Cy Young voting. Only one season in his career was his ERA below league average -- of course, it was 2011 -- and his career 125-81 record is certainly appealing to those who go with the "a pitcher's job is to win" mantra. But his constant emotional meltdowns teamed with a noticeable regression in nearly every stat category and a high price tag have destroyed his value.

Moore also pointed out that Zambrano's contract would be an issue, but the Cubs have made no secret about the fact that they could eat some of the money to rid themselves of Zambrano. We do know the Royals are seeking starting pitching, and probably aren't content with simply trading for Jonathan Sanchez.

Basically, this could be a match, it's just a matter of hammering out a deal. Whether or not it ever comes to fruition remains to be seen.

Royals interested in Carlos Zambrano?

I made a bet three years ago that Zambrano would get to 300 wins faster than Sabathia.  I figured that neither one of them would hit 300 but with Sabathia in NYY, he has a great chance. You don't want to know what the bet is.  Anyway,  I needed to root for Zambrano because I am a huge Cubs fan.  But those rooting days ended this year.  Enough is enough.  The Cubs need to get rid of him at any cost.  The guy is a cancer to the other players.  Where he goes, I don't know.  But I do think he'll play again contrary to any reports he was going to retire.  He would lose too much money if he retired.

With that being said, I hope he lands somewhere and can turn it around.  With his talent he could win 175 games over the next 10-12 and  save me some embarrasment and maybe make me some money.

Take him, please! I would bet the Cubs would cover at least 60% of his salary, good starting point in negotiations. If the Royals want more covered, they would have to part with at least 2 prospects, most likely double - A or lower level. Cubs wont cover more than 60% without at least that much in return. I say it is worth it, the Royals have a much better farm system and this could jump start Theo's rebuilding.

I just don't see him going anywhere, unless the Cubs are willing to eat pretty much all of his contract. If the Cubs are willing to do that, then it might happen. After all, Milton Bradley was traded too, and Carlos Silva...

But again, Zambrano would have to approve the trade, and I am not sure he wants to leave Chicago, unless it is for a contending team (which the Royals are not). The exception may be Florida, er Miami. For that matter, if he goes to the AL he can't hit, and he won't like that.

It would be great if He did go to the American League.
I would see and hear less of him that way.

Are the Royals INSANE? They would be going against everything they are trying to do there. You have all this young talent around the locker-room and you want to bring in this stick of dynomite...DYNOMIIIITE!!! lol, funny word. Anyways. Regardless of the fact that he is a knucklehead, he hasn't pitched well in 3 or 4 years anyways. So once again. Why even bother. Is he really going to make the team improve by 10 wins? No. That would make him an average pitcher would it not. So move on KC, stay young, stay smart. Good move in getting Sanchez, as long as he is healthy.

Royals have a wealth of starting pitching in the minors that's not quite ready for prime time yet.  Zambrano would be a 1 year stop gap at most, similar to the J. Sanchez pick up (FA after this coming season).  Moore is simply looking to catch lightning in a bottle for 1 year until the kids are available, if it works, then it works for both parties and Z can get a contract elsewhere, while the Royals got a decent pitcher for one year . . .

Why would a team that has a wealth of young talent, about to arrive in the big leagues. Want to put them in with a loose cannon like Zambrano?

Any team would be a fool to trade for him. Granted, he is filled with air between the ears, and thinks the opposition is in the same dugout. Teams need to sit back and make the Cubs pay him off and release him and then sign him for next to nothing. If the Yankees have any interest in him, they will wait till he is released or trade for him at the deadline, which I doubt the Cubs will keep him till then. It would be stupid to deal for him when the Cubs have to pay him off if they want him gone.

Getting Zambrano is like getting Milton Bradley on your team. Both are losers and both will tell you how great they are just so they can rip off the next teams pay-roll.  Zambrano`s brain--tick tick tick.
