Berkman: Astros' move to AL 'a travesty'

Lance BerkmanBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Lance Berkman won a World Series with the Cardinals, but he'll still be identified mostly with the Astros, where he spent the first 11-plus years of his career in Houston and in the National League. Berkman, a Houston native, isn't happy with the idea that the Astros could move to the American League.

"I think it's a travesty," Berkman said during a news conference on Tuesday (via the Houston Chronicle). "It's a National League franchise. I think if they were going to do something like that, Milwaukee's the choice to go back to the American League; they're historically an American League franchise.

"It's a shame, I think, that Bud Selig is probably going to make that be sort of a condition of the sale. I don't like it. Even when I retire and live here in Houston, I don't want to go watch American League baseball. I'd like to have a National League team."

There could be an ulterior motive -- Berkman hit .425/.477/.900 with five home runs in 11 games against the Astros in 2011 and .196/.274/.304 with one homer in 15 games against the Brewers.

Bud owns the Brewers. You have to be on something if you think he'd move them back just when they are starting to take over the division (because we know the Cubs won't be doing that any time soon and the Cards just squeeked into the playoffs). But yes, it would make sense to move them, just like the Seahawks were the team that was shifted to the NFC since that is where they began in the first place.

Berkman: Astros' move to AL 'a travesty'

The irony in all of this is that when baseball added the Rays and D-Backs back in the early 90's, Tampa Bay was placed into the AL because baseball did not want the NL to have a monopoly in the state of Florida.  If they had simply placed Tampa Bay and Arizona both into the NL and left Milwaukee where they were, it would still be a 16/14 split in favor of the NL.  Now, it is ok for the AL to have a monopoly in the state of Texas.  Talk about hypocritical.  Leave the leagues at 16 and 14 and replace the three divisions with two divisions:

AL East: Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, New York, Tampa Bay, Toronto
AL West: Chicago, Kansas City, LA Angels, Minnesota, Oakland, Seattle, Texas
NL East: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Miami, Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington
NL West: Arizona, Chicago, Colorado, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Louis

Division champs and two wild cards make the postseason.  It would still be a little easier for an AL team to make the playoffs, but if the all 16 NL teams have an equal chance of making the playoffs instead of the current system, why should that matter?

Berkman is right... the AL sucks. The NL is where real baseball is played. Let's go Cards! 12 in '12!

Gotta love the Puma. He perfectly summed it up with "I don't want to go watch American League baseball." Who does? DH is a joke. All-Star game is a joke, interleague play is a joke, moving the Astros to AL is a joke.

Bud Selig is a joke.

P.S. Let Pete in.

I definitely agree with Lance, moving Houston to the AL is ridiculous. The Brewers are the only team with American league ties.

agreed...if anyone should go, Milwaukee shouldve been bounced back to the AL...better yet, get rid of the DH and interleague play as well...

  • Hate small ballparks?! Guess you hate Wrigley, Busch, Citi, Citizens, PNC and Turner. Only thing big about them is CF. The Astros moving to the AL is a fresh start.

I hate the DH, hate interleague play, hate small ballparks, hate small strike zones, hate long, boring 15-7 games with too many homeruns.  They have ruined baseball to atteact the casual fan who wants to see a homerun rather than a speedy, well played game where strategy and scratching out runs becomes exciting.  No wonder football dominates baseball.

Have to also agree with EJetson points on the DH.  It fundamentally changes the game.  I love offense, but much prefer the strategy involved with managing with the pitchers hitting, bunting, etc.  I'd also like to see interleague play reduced to an absolute minimum, so the fall classic returns to a Fall Classic.
