Berkman: Astros' move to AL 'a travesty'

Lance BerkmanBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Lance Berkman won a World Series with the Cardinals, but he'll still be identified mostly with the Astros, where he spent the first 11-plus years of his career in Houston and in the National League. Berkman, a Houston native, isn't happy with the idea that the Astros could move to the American League.

"I think it's a travesty," Berkman said during a news conference on Tuesday (via the Houston Chronicle). "It's a National League franchise. I think if they were going to do something like that, Milwaukee's the choice to go back to the American League; they're historically an American League franchise.

"It's a shame, I think, that Bud Selig is probably going to make that be sort of a condition of the sale. I don't like it. Even when I retire and live here in Houston, I don't want to go watch American League baseball. I'd like to have a National League team."

There could be an ulterior motive -- Berkman hit .425/.477/.900 with five home runs in 11 games against the Astros in 2011 and .196/.274/.304 with one homer in 15 games against the Brewers.

Berkman: Astros' move to AL 'a travesty'

I agree with Berkman & the asessment of dsmith1227.  Arizona or Colorado make a lot more sense for a move to the AL.  I think the fact that we have the current mis-alignment is due to some "political" pull  when Arizona and Colorado were brought into the league.  No argument against Houston being in the West NL Division, even granting the timezone difference.  Was THAT the issue, perhaps, due to broadcast times in major California markets?  We can only wonder.
Move Arizona to the AL.  C'mon it is a bus ride to California.

Berkman: Astros' move to AL 'a travesty'

Homelandefender:  Milwaukee was not a "national league city".  The Braves were national league and they moved them from Milwaukee to Atlanta.  If Milwaukee wanted a national league team they shouldn't have bought an american league team.

What Heckheckler said about Selig makes sense and it makes me sick.  He messed up the balance of the league by moving his pathetic Brewers to the National League.  Now he will try to correct it by making another wrong, moving the Astros.  What a shame.

wow basically the reason the Brewers should move back to the American League even though they were originally a National League is because you think Bud Selig played dirty pool? Do you remeber he did give the option for the Twins to move in the first place, but they declined then it was the Brewers choice. Honestly does it matter, if the Brewers go back then do it now so they can resign prince and put him at DH. It's not like the team is leaving Houston, you guys should be excited for change. The reason they are targeting the Astros franchise is because it's in bad shape right now and moving another team from any other Division wouldn't make sense. Look at the Brewers when they moved, if you want to blame Selig fine, but you guys sound like whiny kids. Why do I have too? Little Johnny didn't have too! WHAAAAA! WHAAAA! Now go to your room and wait for Daddy Selig to come in later with his belt.

Berkman needs to learn some history..Milwaukee was an NL before the move to Atlanta and only got back in the league by agreeing to an AL Team with the proviso that they would return to the NL at some point. AL power teams will love Houston's ballpark..no matter what league Houston is in,they are 5 years away from contending for anything. Hoston has only one potential rivalry and that is the Rangers.

Sorry, Hec, but there WAS a legitimate reason to move Milwaukee (or whichever team was chosen) to the NL.  At the time, nobody was ready to have interleague play every day of the season.  I'm not ready for it today.  I wish they'd do away with it completely.

If the leagues had remained at 15 teams each, then there would HAVE to be interleague play every day.  That's what will happen if Houston moves to the AL.  It's another step towards the worst possible thing that could happen to baseball, making the DH the universal rule in both leagues.

Not sure I understand the complaints here. If the MLB does in fact want to make it a 15/15 split between the AL and NL, realisticaly there are three teams that could move: Arizona, Colorado and Houston. Houston being put in the NL Central after the creation of three divisions in 1994 never really made sense geographically as all the other teams are from the midwest. Further, it would make all divisions have an equal amount of teams taking the NL Central from six teams to five and the AL West from four to five. Teams in the NL Central would have a much better chance of making the playoffs so I'm not sure why there would be complaints there. My question is why Houston is being targetted for a move and not Arizona or Colorado. Is it just because they want to give the Rangers a natural rival given how they are so far away from all the other division opponents? There is an easy solution to the interleague question: just get rid of it. For all of the Yankees-Mets and Dodgers-Red Sox series you also have Blue Jays-Reds and Twins-Diamondbacks. Just get rid of it.

I completely agree with Hec!  There are a million reasons why another team specifically the Brewers would be better suited to be in the American League and only 2 reasons I can think of tha Houston would work,,, and they are marginal at best, and they are: starting a rivalry with the Rangers and playing teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox at home could be good for attendance.... other than that it stinks all over!

First of all hats off to hec heckler a very well written opinion essay. I think you nailed it on several levels. While I think it would seem odd to see Houston in the American League central or west at the end of the day its about winning. I do beleive that a big part of the reason the attendence is bad is because the team has been bad. Perhaps moving to the al would drive some hardcore fans away and it does leave a sour taste in the mouth of many traditionalists but putting a winning team on the field cures many things. Look what happened in pittsburgh this year when the team was winning the fans started to come back and we know how bad things have been for those long suffering fans. No matter if they stay in the nl central or move to the al this team needs a makeover from top to bottom. Put a playoff caliber team on the feild and no matter where they play the fans will support them.
