Pirates sign catcher Rod Barajas

By Matt Snyder

A few weeks after declining to pick up options on catchers Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder, the Pirates have added a catcher via free agency. Rod Barajas has signed a one-year deal with a team option with the Pirates, the team announced Thursday. Barajas' 2012 salary is $4 million and the option is for $3.5 million reports Yahoo's Tim Brown.

Barajas, 36, hit .230/.287/.430 with 16 home runs in 336 plate appearances for the Dodgers last season. He has good power but doesn't do a good job at getting on base. Expect Barajas to be the primary starter behind the plate for the Pirates with Michael McKenry filling in a few times a week or so. Barajas has never appeared in more than 125 games in a season.

He was pretty much the best option that didn't involve giving up a draft pick to sign, trading away a prospect, or blocking Sanchez. And there's NOW WAY he is pretty much on par with Doumit. He is a vast improvement defensively. Hell, a sack of potatoes would be an improvement over Doumit defensively.

Good singing

Defensively you are correct, but Doumit is a much better offensive player. If the Bucs were chasing a catcher, then why not take a flyer on Ramon Hernandez? I don't "hate" Rod Barajas, but they could have done better here.

I hope you are right about this being a good signing.

Pirates with a move that can only be described as bizarre.  How a cash strapped team like the Pirates can justify spending 4 million on an old catcher who is going to hit .240 or less almost for sure, and has never been a big RBI producer is extremely strange.  I always wonder if there are kick backs in baseball, like in this instance if Barajas gives a half million to the Pirates GM after the deal is done, how else can it be explained?

As a Dodger Fan, I think you guys will be surprised by Barajas.  He is an above average defender, and a good team guy.  I hate to see the Dodgers not resign him honestly.  His numbers aren't really high for average that's for sure, and he got out a lot, but he was hurt a bit this year, and started to pick things up toward the end of the year.  He might be a bit expensive at 4mil.   But I think he will surprise you.

Not sure what to make of this.  It could be an upgrade defensively but sure looks like a downgrade offensively.  I guess when I think about it, I'd rather give up a bit of offense for a solid catcher but will Barajas even be able to catch 80 games.  The good thing is they keep their prospects, however, i'm gonna say all this does is keep the status quo.  They're still treading water.

Weak effort by the Bucco's... I am not a fan of bringing back Doumit and or Snyder, but the idea of bringing in Barajas to be our everyday catcher... mind-boggling!!! He has never appeared in more than 125 and when he did, he wasn't very good...

Even if he is a place holder for Sanchez, I would rather have Sanchez play and have Barajas be the veteran on the bench to guide him through his first year...

I was reading in the Pittsburgh paper, he could be the first catcher to hit more than 15 HR's in quite a few years... ummm... he hit .230!!!

Let's hope this is not our 'splash' of the off season

Pirates sign catcher Rod Barajas

This is the typical crap my Pirates pull every year.  ONly, this one looks worse than all those prior.  Why?  WHY?  WHY do I have season tickets?  Somebody, hit me upside the head with a 2-by-4, please!

We gave up Doumit/Snider for this????? Snyder basically the same player as Barajas, only younger. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!!! I think it's gonna be McHenry getting most of the starts, with Barajas backing up. We'll see how it works out...

This guys HR/AB ratio is still good and with McKenry backing him up, the Pirates made a decent signing considering their lack of power.
