Report: Red Sox call Sizemore, not Beltran

SizemoreBy Evan Brunell

In baseball's hot stove season, it's tough to figure out which rumors are credible and which are not.

For example, the Red Sox have been linked to Carlos Beltran rather extensively, but the Boston Herald says Boston has yet to call on Beltran's services. The team, however, has called Grady Sizemore (pictured), who is a free agent after the Indians declined their team option on the outfielder.

The Red Sox are thought to be seeking a new right fielder -- and one that is right-handed. Internal prospects Josh Reddick and Ryan Kalish are both left-handed. However, the Herald says that until DH David Ortiz's situation is resolved, both Beltran and Sizemore are long shots. If Big Papi doesn't return to Boston, it would give the Red Sox a ton of different options in filling both DH and the right field spot, so it makes sense why the Red Sox are dragging their feet.

Fortunately, most of baseball are slow to sign free agents as they await the resolution of baseball's new labor agreement, which is in the process of being negotiated. The new agreement may change free-agent compensation rules, which would affect the free agent market. Sizemore and Beltran aren't expected to sign anytime soon, while Ortiz's market has been a bit quicker to develop due to Ortiz's market being more clearly defined.

Injury prone outfielder with potential. Didnt the Sox just have that for years with JD Drew ? C'mon. The Red Sox should only sign him if it's dirt cheap with an out clause saying if he cant stay in the lineup to cut him.

I would take Grady Sizemore on the Sox in a heartbeat!
Sure he's been injury prone the past few years but if the price is right I would definitely bring him in.
Having him, Ellsbury and Crawford (for now) would give them a hell of a speedy lineup that could be spread throughout the lineup so there's always a base stealing threat on base.
Plus his defense would be a major plus too, I say they should go for it especially if the price is right.
Oh and I also say ya gotta let Papi walk, he wants big dough, he's 36 - that you know of, he has been injury prone but of course had a great year in a contract year, thank him for all he's done, explain it's nothing personal and let him go to another team.

Somewhat healthy? Have you been watching Sizemore the last 2 years. Healthy and him should not be in the same sentence. Plus, how does this solve the Red Sox glaring need for a right handed bat? Last I checked Grady batted from the left side...

Thats's a very smart move on the Redsoxs part. Hopefully "Big Papi" will resolve the issues and re-sign with the sox. Grady would be a huge plus out in right field. Not to mention a great bat.. I'm not dishing Drew but" We need someone out there thats going to stay atleast halfway healthy.

That makes a lot more sense for the Sox, less risk, probably more reward.
