Phillies reach agreement with Papelbon

Jonathan Papelbon is going to be changing organizations for the first time in his professional career. He has agreed in principle to sign with the Phillies for a four-year contract that approaches $50 million, pending a physical, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. The deal was first reported by Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Phillies had agreed to a deal with incumbent closer Ryan Madson, but that situation fell apart, and several reports later this past week indicated the deal was never fully agreed upon and that the earlier reports jumped the gun. And when things started to fall apart, the Phillies shifted their focus to Papelbon.

Papelbon, 30, is a four-time All-Star and a much more established closer, with 219 career saves (to Madson's 52). The two pitchers are very similar in age (Papelbon is just under two months younger), but, again, Papelbon has a lot more experience as the ninth-inning guy.

Last season, Papelbon saved 31 of 34 chances with a 2.94 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings. A move to the NL should help a bit, though the NL East should prove to be pretty tough next season.

As for Madson, he's left looking elsewhere, as he's surely looking for a closer's job and several teams are seeking an established closer.

Its one of the most vital positions in all of sports. The game is 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth on the road in a game 7.
Funny... how often does THAT scenario happen?
Well, you can only be in 2 possible Game 7s a year if you even make the WS.
And not every Game 7 is a 1 run game.
That said, I'm splitting hairs.
Closers are overrated but they are also vital. You want to have them when you're up by a run or 2 runs in the 9th, otherwise, they get the night off. And only the really great ones can be relied on on a consistent basis. Many of them aren't worth a s***.

And no, closers and goalies are not the same thing.
That's apples and oranges.
Madson had 32 saves in 2011, which was 13th best in the majors. For a team with over 100 wins, they didn't require his services very much.

Starblazer,

Now listen closely you do not play for the Mets so their is no MY METS.And come on do you really think your team
could afford Madson are you kidding.Remeber you root for a team who's owners are MORONS.

And as usual you say things and you are always wrong. How is Pap an upgrade Madson had 32 saves and a 2.37 era
Pap had 31 saves and a 2.94 era.SO THAT IS NOT AN UPGRADE.And Pap blew the playoffs for them.He is not a
MONEY pitcher.Madson has so much more upside. That you were right about.

So 1 out of 3 ain't bad.

You say I insult people?  LMAO    The only person I've argued with in a while is YOU ... I insult YOU because YOU are a MORON.

Attention all CBS members.  Avoid this crackhead Brian8ball guy.  He added me to his favourites and stalks me, follows me to every single thread I go to just to start a fight.

He's a punk kid in mommy's basement that pretends to be a business owner in Manhattan.  He's brutal....

Beware.

Keep spending until you win it.
The race is on between Philadelphia and the Yankees to see who can get the biggest payroll.

definitley happy to see my phils do this... remember madson COULD NOT close prior to last year, and ill feel more comferatble with a guy who has been doing it his whole career, also to the bastardo guys, hes sick but remember he fell apart at the end of last year after being almost unhittable. like the move obviously they were gonna do something, but now i think they need to sign cuddyer or aramis ramirez to boost that offense id like to see them sign rollins now that reyes to florida looks like a done deal.
that would leave:
rollins
victorino
utley
howard
pence
mayberry
a. ramirez
ruiz
this looks alot better than with polanco HES DONE!!! i know its a long shot to sign ramirez but damn they need some offense    &nbs

I wouldn't mind seeing my Mets locking him up. Madson has a real upside.

As for the Phillies...

Papelbon is a great move and upgrade over their closer(s) last year. The guy has a ring and has been consistent. After blowing that last save, I think he knew going back to Boston would be tough and with no Tito and Theo, they may not be the same. He goes to a World Series favorite and virtual playoff lock. The Red Sox may have also decided to move on and give Bard his shot.

You also forgot that Madson also has a ring for 2008, albeit as the 8th inning set-up man.
