The Minnesota Twins have signed Jamey Carroll to a two-year deal to be the team's every day shortstop, CBSSports.com's C. Trent Rosecrans has confirmed through multiple sources.

Jon Heyman of SI.com first reported the news, adding that the deal is worth "close to" $7 million.

Carroll, 37, isn't going to wow anyone with power, but he's a steady player who gets on base. He hit .290 with a .359 on-base percentage for the Dodgers last season. He added six triples and 10 stolen bases while providing valuable innings at second base and shortstop.

With Alexi Casilla the deserved incumbent at second base, the Carroll signing pushes Tsuyoshi Nishioka to backup duty just one year after the Twins signed him to a three-year, $9.25 million deal to come over from Japan.

Too bad the Pohlad's didn't fire former-GM Smith before he traded away J.J. Hardy for next to nothing. Now we resort to signing other teams' castoffs to fill the SS position.

Ryan is great and the Twins won't be basement-dwellers, but we will go back to dumpster-diving in the free agent market.

First of all, it is  new GM but also current President, former-GM, and architect of the Twins success the last ten years.  Not a huge signing, but if he can provide the consistent play he has over his career the Twins won't have to play two of the three guys that didn't get the job done last year.  With a guy a year or two away in the minors, this could help hold things together until then.

WOW. 2-year deal and $7mil for jamey carroll. I watched carroll with the dodgers the last couple of years and he did a nice job this last season when furcall went down but if the twins think he's going to be their everyday shortstop they are going to dissapointed. carroll is not an everyday player and he faded down the stretch in 2011 when the rest of the team was starting to play well. It's not like he's young either being 38 when the 2012 season starts. good luck jamey, you did well with the dodgers and hopefully it will continue with the twins

Playing shortstop for the Twins is exactly like playing QB for the Vikings. You get a one or two year contract and we will see how you do, meaning that they will be over-the-hill and be the last stop of their professional career.

Here's a list
Jim McMahon, Randall Cunningham, Jeff George, Brad Johnson, Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb

JJ Hardy, Alexi Casilla, Christian Guzman, and so many others that I can't even remember. Our last SS that started multiple years was Guzman and he played with the intensity of an accountant on a Friday at 3pm, and he played that way all season long! Get it right Twins and follow the Vikes lead and get a SS that can play for the next few years and be patient with him and it will work out. It could have with JJ? Or maybe we need a new hitting coach? Cause when anyone leaves all of a sudden they become a better hitter. i.e. Punto. not great but better that .210 this year.

I would like to thank the Twins for getting this deal done before Thanksgiving.  I will now allow me to take all of the money that I was going to spend on Twins merchandise & tickets and spend it elsewhere.  Thank you for solidifying the fact that the late 90's of Twins baseball living off the revenue of the Yankees has returned just two seasons after opening a new stadium.

They draw 3 million fans in a season where they lose 99 games and they are going to cut payroll.  I think the other owners should be disgusted with this franchise and not give them any revenue sharing.  At least the team wont be relevant after April.  Congrats on a great signing...

Jamey Carroll is a banjo hitter. He doesn't do anything great and would be a back up on most teams. Tsuyoshi Nishioka was another bust from the Japanese league. I believe many Division III baseball teams would beat the best teams in Japan.

The Twins have far more needs then Jamey Carroll.

Come on, though not monumental news, it is newsworthy enough to report.  Man, cynicism seems to rule these days!
