Aramis Ramirez

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez won't be returning to the Cubs, his agent told MLB.com.

"That ship has sailed," Paul Kinzer told Carrie Muskat of MLB.com

Kinzer said Ramirez, 33, is looking for a three- or four-year deal with a new team, and is in no hurry to sign with a new team.

"As the market establishes itself and people find out if they're in or not on [Albert] Pujols or [Prince] Fielder, and who's in on [Jose] Reyes, Aramis is going to be there," Kinzer said. "He's not looking at an eight-year contract. He's going to be looking in the four-[year] ranger, and maybe three with an option. It's going to be his choice."

Ramirez hit .306/.361/.510 with 26 home runs and 93 RBI in 2011 and is a .284/.342/.500 hitter in his career. Ramirez struggled in 2010, but bounced back last season to be the Cubs' most productive hitter.

Ramirez is coming off a five-year, $71 million deal with the Cubs he signed after exploring free agency following the 2006 season. He was traded to Chicago in 2003 from Pittsburgh.

"There's no problems there, but it's the point where it's the end of an era," Kinzer told MLB.com. "They have some things they have to do, and at this point in his career, [Rafael Furcal] got his ring, and now Ramy wants his. He wants to go somewhere where he has a shot at a competitive team. He loves Chicago and it hurts for him to leave, but that's part of the sport."

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

not long ago he wanted to stay, so either this decision was not his or its about $$. a team that weak in talent. i think he expected them to spend alot more than they seem to be going to. ive never heard cubs mentioned in any of the top free agents. so when i say it could be about money it doesnt neccessarily mean his own paycheck.

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

Apparently halfdolla I'm not a true Cub fan. I guess I don't look at the Cubs thru rose colored glasses. In Ramirez's defense, stats wise he put up great numbers in 2011, I'll give you that. Not so sure his numbers in 2010 will back your statement. The objective of bringing in a new President, GM, Headcoach, etc. is to change the Cubs losing ways. By granting Ramirez another large contract along the lines of Jim Hendry, you are continuing the old ways of doing business that don't seem to work in Chicago. Aramis is lazy and tempramental, plays hard when he feels like it and dogs it the other 75% of the time. Imagine the kind of numbers he could put up if he played his but off every day. I still believe that both sides will benefit by a parting of the ways. Time to build a new winning way !

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

Bottom line....this is a HUGE loss for the Cubs.  We really could use him for 3 more years until someone in the minors is ready to step up.  ARam was a great clubhouse guy for us and played consistently and consistently put up great numbers for us.  Plus people dwell on at times he didnt hustle but his defense was really good.  No we have to put some schlub over at the corner and we will be going through the next 10 years of having 10 starting 3rd baseman.  Have we forget the issues we went through before ARam came to us through the 80's and 90's?  We had a different starting 3rd baseman every frigging year.

ARam from TRUE Cubs fans you will be sorely missed.  He was our offense the past few years and now we are in trouble.  If Aram didnt play last year we would of won only 50 games.  Good Luck ARam with the Marlins.

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

Kinzer and Ramirez failed to mention he is no where to be found in the early months of the mlb season.  Yeah Aramis put up numbers but it was when the Cubs were 20 games out of it.  Also for the critics who say Aramis is a warm weather player uh he has been in the show since 1998 and started in Pittsburgh.  I'd like Mr. Kinzer to sell the new team on Aramis Ramirez's steller post season stats of .194 batting average with 67 ab's in 18 games.

Ramirez leaving the Cubs will be beneficial to both the Cubs and Ramirez. Aramis represents everything that has been wrong with the Cubs franchise for a long, long time. Cubs players haven't been held accountable for years. Specificly in Ramirez case, from day to day you don't know which player will show up. He goes thru the motions but seldom gives a full effort. It's players like this that can destroy a teams chemistry and attitude. I would rather have someone who is willing to get dirty on every play and hits a few less homeruns, than someone who only shows up to play a couple of times a week. Maybe a change of venue would be good for Aramis's attitude and future. Usher in the new era for Chicago.

With it seeming that the Cubs are in a rebuilding transition, Ramirez's exit isn't a surprise. In fact, I'd love to see the guy hold down third base for the Dodgers for the next four years.

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

As a Phillies fan I don't want to trade a defensive gem at third who had trouble hitting because he was injured for a power hitter who can't field whether he is healthy or not.  Not to mention the last thing the Phillies need is to be tied for multiple years to an aging almost superstar, Phils need to get younger at potential starter openings not older.  Put it this way, would you rather sign Rollins or Ramirez?  We can only afford one and if you answer anything but Rollins you are a nut job.

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

instead of this picture they should put the video on here from about 5 years ago when ramirez lost that pop fly in the sun and it hit him in the head. I think that would more accurately sum up his time in chicago. Anybody who watches baseball know that this guy is not clutch, is not a great teammate, and is not really a factor when the game is on the line. I am sure he will get a good contract, but I am also sure that whatever team offers it to him will regret it later. IMHO, i guess.

Agent says Aramis Ramirez won't return to Cubs

I just want to know how much crack they smoked to think he would do better than $16 million for next year.  Here's a guy who has trouble staying healthy and only has 2? 100 RBI seasons I'm thinking 4/48 is about the best he can hope for so why not take the 16 and sign your new deal next year.  Oh well, no accounting for greed and stupidity.
