Epstein: Zambrano can earn his way back to Cubs

Carlos ZambranoBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Carlos Zambrano's Cubs career may not be over quite yet -- new president Theo Epstein told reporters he met with Zambrano and didn't close the door on a return to Wrigley Field for the volatile right-hander.

"We told him we would give him the right to earn his way back to being a Cub, that nothing would be given to him," Epstein told reporters (via the Chicago Tribune) on Monday after meeting with Zambrano, agent Barry Praver and Cubs farm director Oneri Fleita.

"He could earn his way back through very hard work this winter, through rebuilding relationship man-to-man with all his teammates and through other steps we discussed," Epstein said.

Zambrano was suspended by the team after he left during a game in Atlanta on Aug. 12 following an ejection for throwing at Chipper Jones. Epstein described Zambrano as "contrite" in their meeting.

"He expressed a strong desire to be a Cub and an even stronger desire to have a real good 2012 season," Epstein said (via the Chicago Sun-Times). "He's in great shape, working real hard."

Zambrano also encountered controversy in 2010 when he started a fight in the dugout during a game. The 30-year-old is in the final year of a five-year, $91.5 million contract. He went 9-7 with a 4.82 ERA last season and is 125-81 with a 3.60 ERA in his 11 seasons with the Cubs. He is currently playing winter ball in his native Venezuela.

Epstein: Zambrano can earn his way back to Cubs

Why do I get the feeling that if it were Jim Hendry making waves like he wants Zambrano back, that all Cub fans would be screaming bloody murder? But because it is Theo Epstein, it is this great move to give him another chance, and if he pitches well it will be this plus?

Cub fans, it doesn’t matter how well Zambrano pitches this year. He can win the Cy Young like he has predicted so many times before. But he is not part of the Cub future, he shouldn’t be. He is a jerk, a distraction, a POS as some of you have said. And will never be anything else.

If the Cubs are truly looking into the future, they have to cut this guy, if they can’t trade him. He does you no good, and no team will take him and his huge contract, now or next year or ever. Keeping him doesn’t help the team for the future, impossible. He is an albatross to the team. He cannot possibly help the Cubs rebuild, so they need to let him go.

Its simple, cancer or not you cannot trade someone of value for nothing, The Cubs cannot just cut him (they likely WILL cut Soriano), they have to see if they can get him to the point where in trading him you can get value in return. Since the Cubs also likely will not get in on CJ Wilson, although perhaps on Darvish, will need pitching depth and if Big Z can go out every 4th or 5th day and pitch well it will end up being the smart move rather than eating his contract or trading him for a stale bag of peanuts.

Theo is just trying to raise the value on this toxic POS and smooth the waters in case he is stuck with him next year.  Nothing more than that...purely PR, nothing more.

I know that Big Z has been a POS lately, but he is nowhere near the azzhole that Milton Bradley is.  He is in a "club" of his own.

Zambrano and Milton Bradley should start a Fight Club.

Big Z might change for a while, but he will always be a child in a big body! Theo, I hope is trying to save whats left in that contract instead of letting it go to waste or having to eat it. Just don't re-sign him if he bends over for you Theo.

Glad to hear that the door has not yet been closed.  I love Zambrano's passion; it carries through into everything that he does. Yet, as with most of us, his greatest strength is also his greatest weakness.  He needs to learn how to focus his passion and control his anger.  A good attitude coach may be the answer to that problem.  "Z" is a talented athlete.  If he gets his head on straight he can be a valuable asset to the Cubs.
