Report: Red Sox have made an offer to Ortiz

David Ortiz

By C. Trent Rosecrans

It seems to be just a matter of time -- and money -- before David Ortiz re-signs with the Red Sox. Boston has already made an offer to the designated hitter, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

However there seems to be some difference between the two sides, because no agreement has come out yet. Still, expect to see Big Papi back with the Red Sox, as there are few openings at the spot available -- and even fewer teams willing to open their pocketbook for a DH.

The Blue Jays and Orioles could use a DH, but Bradford quotes Orioles GM Dan Duquette as calling Oritz " a luxury item" and Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopolous noted the DH spot isn't a priority for his squad.

Last week, Boston GM Ben Cherington said he wanted Ortiz back with the Red Sox.

HAHAHA I love it! YOU TELL THEM IDIOTS! just to add to what you said, Look at the Rays, they spent even less than the Jays and still beat the Red sox to the post season!, That's what the jay are doing and it will work!!! Jays don't need to spend and spend on big names I believe in the system and I know that it will work, the Rays are proof enough for me!

I'd be OK with it even if it were a sentimental signing, he's done enough for the team.  That being said, the man performs.  I would like to see us go after Cuddyer though, he's a talented veteran who fits nicely at multiple positions.  He'd be a huge step up from Drew (faint praise, but still) and I'd trust him a heck of a lot more than Sizemore.
Is Ortiz , Cuddyer or Sizemore going to pitch for the Sox? Signing guy after guy who is offensive minded isn't going to help there pitching problems. They can't just go out and try to win 11-10 games against everyone all year.

Smarter as in spend less to win less? That is what a DH does Hit and nothing else. No other expectations. KNowing the Jays as we do they will sit on their brains and do nothing and finish in 4th or 5th place and celebrate mediocrity. Yeh O Canada!!!
so we know why the Sox will fail, now what is the Jays excuse for coming in 4th place while winning the same amount of games as they lost??? Cheap?? Suck?? Cant compete in the mightly AL East??? what is the excuse for mediocrity outside of being from Canada?

I think going .500 is pretty damn good for a 60 million dollar payroll. The Red Sox spent like 160 and still failed. It's funny you talk like they are so much better than The Jays..why??? Since 1918 the Sox have won two world series titles. The Jays came into baseball in the 70's and have just as many world series titles as the Sox!!! TALK ABOUT A FAILURE OF A FRANCHISE!!! TWO TITLES IN 90 YEARS!!!!!! Maybe next season they can spend 400 million to attempt to win.

So if your the Red Sox, what does your extra 100 million dollar in payroll get you?? over the Jays 60, 9 FREAKIN WINS!!!!!! That's some very expensive wins.

Lackey, Crawford,Drew,Dice K..all brilliant signings.. LOL!!!! Let's just keep spending and spending and maybe someday we will be the Yankees, I am almost sure it says that somewhere on a wall in a Fenway Park office somewhere.

The Red Sox,Lackey, Crawford,Drew,Dice K..all brilliant signings.. LOL!!!! one of the worst history's in baseball, and on top of that one of the, if not the biggest collapse in sports history...not to mention Buckner.

Go sit on your hands and diddle yourself idiot, so you can pretend it is someone else...get it???? Here's a few cases of beer and some chicken wings for the upcoming season.

26 hrs. .308 BA, 96 rbi's, .953 OPS and people are questioning whether they should resign the guy? How many hitters put up those numbers in MLB last year? Duquette belongs with the loser Orioles, both he and the Toronto GM know they have no shot at getting Ortiz is why they make the comments, this is not a sentimental signing, there will be no varitek or Wakefield in Boston next year, those would be sentimental.

I don't know what they offered him. I do know they should try to get Pujols first.  If they sign Papi, that must mean they will go for Willingham, Cuddyer, or Ludwick also.  Toronto may be an option, but I think if you play in Toronto, the team has to offer you more because of the tax bite, and Toronto may not want to do that. I guess the Yankees are a possibility though and that may be the only reason Boston feels threatened to sigm him.
I'd be curious if you play in NY, just what your taxes are there. Unless the state and city are giving breaks to baseball players, I don't think it makes any difference where you live, they tax you in NY.

Lavarnway could DH and back-up at catcher ...  and he'd cost $1 million.  He won't get 100 RBIs but i'd bet he could net 80 RBIs as a full-time player.   The Sox shouldn't resign OLDER players ... they NEED PITCHING and every dollar for FAs should be going towards pitching IMO.
