According to general manager Ben Cherington -- via ESPN Boston -- the Red Sox have narrowed their list of possible managers to three names: Bobby Valentine, Torey Lovullo and Gene Lamont.

As we've previously noted, Valentine had an all-day interview with Cherington Monday and there's much speculation that he's the favorite to land the job. But it's not a done deal and there are two other candidates.

Lamont, 64, is currently the Tigers' third base coach, but has two managerial stints under his belt. He managed the White Sox from 1992-1995, winning the AL manager of the year in 1993 as the White Sox won the AL West. Lamont's Sox were in first again in 1994, but the season was ended without a postseason due to labor strife. He then managed the Pirates from 1997-2000, never winning more than 79 games in a season.

Lovullo, 46, was the Blue Jays' first-base coach in 2011 after being the Pawtucket Red Sox manager in 2010. He also managed for several years in the Indians' minor-league system and has a pair of manager of the year awards to show for that time.

There's no timetable set for a hire, but with the list narrowed to three candidates, it's reasonable to believe a hire is coming soon.

Red Sox narrow managerial candidates to three

You know the Red Sox should have all ready had their manager in place for the General Manager Meetings. But I guess Cherington has had more on his mind. Gene Lamont would be O.K but Lovullo wold be the better pick.

bobby V knows his baseball.  the only thing is he will not put up with any outside tinkering and he does things his way.  he won't put up with medling owners or bitching players.  he's gonna put in the guy who wants to play and plays hard every game over a guy with a lot of talent who is being a bitch.

also i loved when he got kicked out of the Mets game and then came back into the dugout with that shit fake nose, beard, and glasses.  that was gold!

News is the payroll will climb to 200 million to accomodate the rising price of fried chicken, cold beers and video games.

Well, if they hire Valentine, they'll have to clear it with Josh Beckett, who has free reign in Boston. He can drink and eat whatever, whenever he wants and doesn't even have to pitch well every 5th day (in Sept, it was more like every 8th or 9th day). Remember when Bobby V. dissed Beckett for being so slow and wasting everyone's time that Sunday night game against the Yankees? It was dead-on, but sensitive Josh prob didn't like it. I bet the old sourpuss is still holding a grudge. After he drains a Natty Light in the clubhouse (around the 2nd inning), he crushes the can and grinds his teeth, cussing Bobby V (or so I heard).

I think it would be perfect, actually. Beckett will be unmanageable for yet another year, his charge wee Jonny Lester will follow suit and the $170 million all-time choke machine will roll on. The Red Sox are back! I wonder if they are favored to win it all again in 2012.

Where did the perception that Booby V. is hard-nosed come from?  Because he argues with the umps?  I'm from NYC, watched him manage the Mets - he's more clown than anything.  I'm really hoping they hire him so I can watch my 31 Yankee Sunday night games in peace.

I'm no fan of Bobby V but, maybe he's hard nose enough to whip this team of prima-donas into shape.  Otherwise, would give the job to Lovullo.  Lamont is just another re-tread the Sox don't need to concern themselves with.
