Blue Jays acquire Luis Valbuena from Indians

Luis ValbuenaBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally a slow time in the hot stove action, and this year is no different, but Saturday did see one minor (and I do mean minor) deal, as the Blue Jays acquired infielder Luis Valbuena from the Indians in return for cash considerations, according to one of Cleveland's official Twitter accounts.

The Indians had designated Valbuena for assignment on Nov. 18. The 25-year-old infielder hit .209/.227/.279 in just 17 games for the Indians in 2011. He played in 194 games in 2009 and 2010 combined, but hit just .226/.287/.348 in those two seasons combined. He did hit 10 homers in 2009.

This is hardly the Blue Jays' answer at second base where the team lost Kelly Johnson, but he is at least a backup plan in case the team can't find anyone better or just need some depth at Triple-A.

Well Jays fans, don't expect too much.  Not as though you gave much up either.  Valbuena is an AMAZING minor league player; but he poops himself when he gets to the big leagues.  Hope you guys can get him figured out; for his sake.  Good luck.

Jays fans love "potential." It's all we talk about every year. You could add a guy that last year went 1 for 400, with 1 RBI, and they'd worship AA for adding yet more "potential" and prospects, striking fear to all AL East fat cats that the Jays are knocking on their door in 2012...or is it 2013....or maybe 2016? Always subject to change. Valbuena and re-signing Edwin Encarnacion...AA is tearing it up in the off-season so far.
Maybe instead they should run out and sign a guy like Vernon Wells for 24 million, or how about Frank Thomas? or BJ Ryan? or AJ Burnett? Those all went well didn't they?

What team is "tearing it up" this off season? NO ONE! Who is worshipping anyone? It's just a guy added to the depth chart, who could be shipped down to AAA. If your so against Anthopolous and the Jays approach, go cheer for another team.

What a douche.

I suppose technically the Jays have lost Kelly Johnson, but I think there's still an 80% chance he'll re-sign in Toronto. The new CBA certainly makes it more likely than Johnson will be offered a multi-year contract elsewhere, but I honestly think he'll end up accepting arbitration in Toronto. He'll have a one year deal, but for the most he could realistically make next season. It would give him a chance to re-establish his value a little more (he's better than he played last year), and would fill a stop gap for the Jays. Seems to make too much sense from both sides not to happen, but one never knows what Anthopoulos has up his sleeve.

The team "lost Kelly Johnson"? Really? He's a free agent, Same with Aaron Hill.

This move is just another guy with potential to add to the depth chart. Anytime you can get a guy without giving up a player in return it is a win win situation.

Relax....clearly he is just a filler, might not even make big league club.  Kelly Johnson will be back at 2B next year, and will hit 20 HR, 70 RBI for sure.

A.A needs to make a statement and go after a big name to patrol 2 bag after letting Hill get away...and soon! As every Jays fan( and Twinkies fan) knows, Valbuena is not the answer, even long term.
