The San Francisco Giants have extended the contracts of general manager Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy, the club announced Tuesday. Both are now signed through 2013 with club options for 2014.

“Brian and Bruce are certainly two of the finest professionals at their respective positions in all of baseball. They have effectively built and fostered a winning tradition at all levels of our organization. I have no doubt that they will achieve continued success for the Giants in the coming years and beyond,” said Giants president and CEO Larry Baer.

Under Sabean's watch, the Giants have won four NL West titles, one wild card berth, two National League pennants and one World Series championship. His 15 years as GM is the longest stint in club history and also makes the 51-year-old the longest tenured current GM in Major League Baseball.

Bochy, 56, became the Giants manager in 2007 after 15 years managing the Padres. He won the NL West four times for San Diego along with one pennant. His only playoff appearance for the Giants came in 2010, when he won it all. He has a 409-401 record in five seasons for San Francisco.

The 2011 season was a disappointment for the Giants, as they finished eight games behind the surprising Diamondbacks in the NL West. Still, the body of work for both Sabean and Bochy was enough to convince Baer to extend their respective contracts.

I don't like it. Sabean is clueless when it comes to offense and free agent signings and trades.  And clueless when it comes to assesing hitting.  Bochy is an AL manager on an NL team with his refusal to play small ball. He leaves wins on the table every year waiting for a 3 run homer that isnt coming. in the NL you need to manufacture runs and put pressure on the defense. Its no mystery why pitchers were just blowin through our line-up this year.  no runners being sacraficed to scoring position. Not enough base stealing even when Burris and ford were on the team.  He played apart in the terrible offense by not letting young guys get into rhythm because he had to play his sorry A$$ veterans. How he handled belt was putrid.  Yeah he struggled but hitters need enough AB's to find there rhythm not hit a HR then get benched the next night.  He insisted on throwing Rowand and Huff and others out there instead of letting the youngsters get the experience they need.  These guys both need to realize we need to get young players with little scouting reports and young hungry and enthusiastic. not bring in old declining vets with scouting reports longer than a roll of toilet paper.  And before any of you say it. It was our pitching that won that world series (all time great performance by a staff). And we got a little lucky a couple of our hitters got hot, it wasnt because these guys are geniuses. Although both did good coming down the stretch of the 10 season and playoffs. other than that they have been mediocre at best.

Not really. the reason the offense was bad was partly his fault. He stuck with the worthless vets way too long and I still think he leaves wins on the table by not playing small ball. he continues to let proven double play hitters bat with runners on 1st and 2nd and 0 out. He is pretty crappy at manufacturing runs. he would be a great coach for Yankees or red Sox who dont need to bunt or steal bases. But for an NL coach he is lacking.

Bochy was very underrated last year. The fact the Giants were even in contention is pretty amazing considering the injuries and offensive woes the had to contend with.

Great move by the Giants.  Now Bochy needs to give the youngsters a chance to play.  We can't go into next season with an old team.  We need a quanlity leadoff man and couple of big bats to go along with Posey and Kung-fu-Panda.  We have to get younger and faster to compete with teams in the league now.  We must be able to manufacture runs whether the bats are working or not.  We can't do that with an old team that can't steal bases and hits into double plays as often as the sun rises.  Can't win like that.Cool

A smart decision, both of these guys are among the tops in all of baseball at their respective positions. And with the Giants system doing well at all levels, Sabean looks to maintain the Giants as a playoff contender for years.

Great news, and not exactly unexpected. Sabean has had some missteps along the way, the Zito signing being the most obvious but, he did bring us fans a long-awaited World Series title in 2010. Let's see what he can do for the offense this off season. As far as Bochy, he did just about all he could this season with the injuries and putrid hitting. I have total confidence in both these guys to keep up the great work and work hard to bring the City another title.
