David DeJesusBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Theo Epstein era in Chicago is starting with David DeJesus, as the team announced it signed the free-agent outfielder to a two-year deal worth $10 million with a team option for 2014. There is thought, though, this move could be a precursor to a bigger move, perhaps a trade of Alfonso Soriano.

DeJesus, who will be 32 in December, has played all three outfield spots, but is primarily a corner outfielder. He hit .240/.323/.376 with 10 home runs for the Athletics in 2011, but is a .284/.356/.421 career hitter. For now, DeJesus will be penciled in as the team's everyday right fielder.

The left-handed hitting DeJesus will benefit from moving from the spacious park in Oakland to the more hitter-friendly Wrigley Field. Last year was his only year in Oakland after spending the first eight years of his career in Kansas City.

As for a trade, the Cubs would love to get rid of Soriano, but nearly any deal would require them to eat much of Soriano's massive salary -- and it's one that would make Adam Richmond blush. The Cubs still owe Soriano $54 million through 2014. If they are able to get rid of him, that would open up a spot for Tyler Colvin or prospect Brett Jackson.

$10M is little money!?!  You are the 1% that the Occupy Wall Street are protesting against.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

OK let’s be a little realistic here. I admit I am not a Cub fan, so I am not gonna go overboard for this signing. I’ve seen DeJesus play and he has been a good player in the past. Last year he was terrible. But will he be a good player with the Cubs no one can say.

But what bugs me is Cub fans who are ready to elect Epstein governor for this move. I bet most Cub fans have never seen DeJesus play, or have even heard of him until today. So to praise this move before he has one at bat as a Cub is way too premature. I would suggest that people, Cub fans or not, just wait and see what happens.

For all you whiners out there bashing everything about the Cubs, drink some of our Cubby Kool-Aid and you will feel much better. DeJesus is a stud. Good looking swinger of the bat from the left hand side. He even runs well, which has not been said about many Cubs lately. I like him in the 2 or the 6 slot in the batting lineup. This guy is a good athlete. Let give the guy a chance. He is definatly a positive addition to the outfield. I bet he hits .280 and hits 20 HR.

Yikes. Theo must not be going for the "win now" strategy. DeJesus is terribly ordinary. As an A's season ticket holder, I can tell Cubbies fans that you won't ever notice him. That could be good but its mostly bad.

Nice add for a very sad D - they need a true closer, a top 3 starter and one more big bat to contend in this week division!

Poor defense... he had a 241 game streak in a row without an error.

He's an overall OF upgrade for a relatively low price he will bounce back in Wrigley and is a experienced lefthanded hitter which the Cubs do not have. Good move still more to come in 2-3 sombody will be ready form within or you can always sigs a FA to move around the OF. I would still like to see that young Cuban OF in Wrigley. As far as the article talking about a spot for Brett Jackson who is a CF. That will happen when Bird is traded before the deadline. Colvin and Jackson still need time in AAA.
