David DeJesusBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Theo Epstein era in Chicago is starting with David DeJesus, as the team announced it signed the free-agent outfielder to a two-year deal worth $10 million with a team option for 2014. There is thought, though, this move could be a precursor to a bigger move, perhaps a trade of Alfonso Soriano.

DeJesus, who will be 32 in December, has played all three outfield spots, but is primarily a corner outfielder. He hit .240/.323/.376 with 10 home runs for the Athletics in 2011, but is a .284/.356/.421 career hitter. For now, DeJesus will be penciled in as the team's everyday right fielder.

The left-handed hitting DeJesus will benefit from moving from the spacious park in Oakland to the more hitter-friendly Wrigley Field. Last year was his only year in Oakland after spending the first eight years of his career in Kansas City.

As for a trade, the Cubs would love to get rid of Soriano, but nearly any deal would require them to eat much of Soriano's massive salary -- and it's one that would make Adam Richmond blush. The Cubs still owe Soriano $54 million through 2014. If they are able to get rid of him, that would open up a spot for Tyler Colvin or prospect Brett Jackson.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

In Theo we trust..............after all the mismanagement of the Cubs in the past, I'm going to give Theo the benefit of the doubt with anything he does, at least for awhile. This move reeks of signing a player to a low risk/medium reward deal where if it doesn't work out, no big deal. The Cubs won't be competing until 2014 at the earliest, so this isn't a big move in the grand scheme of things. Pujols or Fielder aren't going to singlehandedly rescue this franchise next year and it would be a waste of money to sign them now to play on a  bad team.

This guy has to be the worst defensive outfielder in the game. In a few games this year he dropped pop flies that were  right in his glove....real power hitter also....10 homeruns. Come on Theo..start spending the Cubs money on players of value. So what if you sign 4 high priced guys and  only 1 works out.

It's worth the risk to get DeJesus, he might bounce back but he might not. He didn't cost all that much money to find out.

The biggest problem is his age though, not that 32 is old but he could be at the end of his career, he is near that age for many players.

I doubt very very much that this means Soriano will be traded; nobody wants him if they have to pay his salary. More likely this means the Cubs have no faith in Colvin to play RF (and perhaps Colvin is on the way out).

What should his first move be, signing Pujols? What a thoughtless comment. Who would criticize bringing in a solid outfielder, other then someone who would have criticized any move, probably including a big splash. Negative posts from know nothing fans.

Whats funny to me is non Cub Fans that come into our forum and talk nonsense. Never in my life have I gone to another teams forum to post something, simply because I dont care about them. All of you non Cub fans sure spend a lot of time on our posts, articles and basically in our business. I wonder why, probably because you are jealous that even though we havent won in 103 years, and dont have a good team right now, we stay faithful and optimistic. Stick to your own teams.

Theo finally has arrived...via the short bus...Really? David De Jesus.... Thats all they need is another Reed Johnson. If you were a Gm of team like the Cubs with their history and all and your 1st move is this one? The cubs have plenty of guys like De Jesus and look where it got them the pasrt few years.

Nothing is more funny than a club that has to eat crow as much as the Cubs. Well, maybe if it were the Yanks or Red Sox it would be pretty funny also. Here we have this enourmously over-paid douche of a player, one that the Cubs themselves HAD TO HAVE. Well, you certainly got him don't ya. This is the ONLY and I mean ONLY sport, where schilling out so much money on player's actually hurts the improvment of one's team. Not only is it funnier because there is NO CAP, but the fact that these owner's and GM's are doing this to themselves. Ya, say what you want about agents and driving up prices, but it's those dummy GM's that say...Yes, we'll be dumb enough to cripple our franchise and assure that any young talent we may have will certainly be old by the time you figure out how to get this albatross of your team. Theo is right at home in Chicago, with the free spending of the Cubs. Only difference, this is isn't Boston Dorothy.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

Very true. Thanks for clarifying. Mazzaro may have gotten shelled last season, one ginormous one comes to mind, but I'll still take two of him to one David DeJesus. Once again ... GOOD LUCK CUBBIES!! At least you will always have the 7th inning stretch.

Cubs sign OF David DeJesus to 2-year deal

I have to agree. David DeJesus is a good move for the cubs. I don't understand why eveyone is saying Theo Epstein overpaid, eveyone just wants Theo to save up and get Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder, and as a Chicago Cubs fan I dont think getting Pujols or Fielder is the right direction for us. I think we need to build up the minor leagues. DeJesus will be a good fit for the cubs. A much needed lefty bat.
