Laynce NixBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Phillies have reached an agreement with free-agent outfielder Laynce Nix, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports.

The deal is for two years, pending a physical.

Nix, 31, hit .250/.299/.451 with the Nationals last season and is a career .244/.288/.430 hitter. He is a good defender in the corner outfield spots and has never really had a chance to play full time. The left-handed Nix hit .263/.306/.475 against right-handed pitching, but struggled in limited time against lefties. All 16 of his home runs -- and 43 of his 44 RBI -- came against left-handers. He had just four hits in 34 plate appearances as a pinch-hitter.

Nix will likely be an extra outfielder, but could serve in a platoon role with John Mayberry Jr. in left. Mayberry, though, could play first in the absence of Ryan Howard, with Nix starting in left until Howard returns.

i feel like nix and wiggington are the type of players that got the big hits in the playoffs that helped the giants and cardianls win championships

I can't agree that signing this guy means the Phils are conceding anything. He's a fourth OF. Decent glove, baseball savvy ... how is this conceding? Every team needs a versatile guy.
Nix can't hit lefties very well but ... neither can a lot of us.

Agreed that this is not a blockbuster move, but it will be a solid bench player in case someone needs filling in for.  I do think Martinez can be a good player, he filled in decently for Polanco. His fielding is solid and his batting can be too with the right hitting coach.  I can't beliee that someone earlier in this thread that the Phils re conceading this year because Howard is hurt.  I guess that means with them using Valdez last year in place of Utey that they conceaded last year too!

Ryan Howard is not the only piece that makes the Phillies the Phillies.  As long as the pitching stays strong again this year and if we actually learn to play small ball.  In that I mean if our brickhead manager (Manual) will actually do it. It might just cover thier butts until Ryan Howard gets back and who knows maybe even help us get back to the WS by playing sound fundamental baseball!

its not a blockbuster obviously but can make sense.
lets face it Raul is gone
Polanco is constatntly hurt and not a Sept-Oct type player
Michael Matrinez really brings nothing to the table
Francisco couldnt start for the Cleveland Indians
Valdez is a nice utility player
Gload was mediocre at best

I think Ruben is looking at teams likes the Cardinals, Giants and even their team in 2008
Where they are filled with role players and guys who can catch lightning in a bottle late in the season.

I just hope all of these little moves, Thome (who I love), Wiggington (ok move) and now Nix do not destroy our chances of possibly picking up another legitimate player like Cuddyer.

But I think we now have a ton of depth and pro, scrappy type players that can help and fill various roles due to poor play and injuries.

I don't know what Lance Nix gives you. This move tells me the Phillies are conceding next year with Howard gone. Thome isn't going to give the Phils anything either, because he can't play the field, so I don't get these moves.

Good pick-up.  He probably got Ross Gload's money.  You can never have enought depth.  Now we have Thome and Nix as lefties off the bench late in a game.  It's got to be better than Michael Martinez and Pete Orr.

Ridiculous pick up. What has killed the Phils last two seasons has been a lack of clutch hitting. This guys is a career 240 hitter, our roster and the minors are littered with this type of guy. Big waste of time and certainly not a difference maker.

As long as they aren't overpaying, this is a good signing.  It gives the Phillies legitimate depth in the OF.  His series-saving HR against the Cards notwithstanding, Francisco never developed into a reliable player coming off the bench.  With Nix and Thome you have two players who can fill in if and when Howard and Mayberry are unable to play.  So if you have Thome at first and Mayberry in the OF against lefties, you could then have Mayberry at first and Nix in LF against righties.  When Howard comes back, you could have Nix fill in for Mayberry when he needs time off, or if Mayberry moves to 1B to give Howard a day off, then Nix plays.  And two years makes a lot of sense.  That's probably the window the Amaro believes will be needed to make sure that Dom is truly ready to take another crack at the majors.  So in 2 years we say adios to Nix and bonjour to Dom.
