Is 'mystery team' on Pujols the Angels?

DALLAS -- For the past two days, it was thought that free agent first baseman Albert Pujols was choosing between the Miami Marlins and the only team he's ever known: The St. Louis Cardinals. Tuesday night, however, reports surfaced that there was an unknown, third team bidding for Pujols' services. The belief, according to sources of's Danny Knobler and several other reporters, is that this "mystery team" is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The move would be intriguing. First of all, earlier this winter, the Angels were telling everyone who would listen they couldn't spend much money this offseason. But lately they've been said to be the frontrunner for free agent pitcher C.J. Wilson. Also, asked earlier Tuesday by media if he preferred a pitcher or hitter, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he'd rather have a pitcher.

Still, the Angels don't have that one big bat in the middle of their batting order, and Pujols definitely would fill that void. It's possible the Angels could backload what will likely be a very long-term deal in order to get through the next few years of rough payroll. Also, a move to the American League would make sense, considering Pujols could serve as a designated hitter once he hit his late 30s. That could extend his career a bit.

So is it the Angels? We still can't be sure.'s Scott Miller is "highly skeptical" that it's the Angels because he doesn't believe owner Arte Moreno would shell out that kind of dough at this time.

Others have speculated the Cubs are the mystery team, in an attempt to make sure the Cardinals either lose Pujols to the Marlins or overpay to keep Pujols.

The situation is certainly fluid. Stay tuned.

Is 'mystery team' on Pujols the Angels?

STL should offer him 7 YEARS and 30MILLION a Year and be done with it. If he is not happy with 210 Million dollars then let him go. We have 11 World Series Titles and could upgrade our Team even more if we react to Free Agents now. Buherle would be a great pickup. Saint Louis sells out all the time and the 3 Million in attendence will continue every Year. Hope he stays but its time to sign him or let him walk to more $$$$ Craig will be fine and could be back by April so I believe cards doing right by getting his knee fixed now

Is 'mystery team' on Pujols the Angels?

The Los Angeles Angels have pulled off a massive 3-way trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins.  The exact details of the trade are not clear yet, but the key players involved are Albert Pujols, Hanley Rameriz, Kendry Morales, and Vernon Wells, with Pujols and Hanley Rameriz going to the Angels for a handful of players and also cash considerations  The St. Louis Cardinals who were able to offer Albert Pujols the best contract available to him as far as money and total years goes will sign and trade away Pujols for players from both the Angels and the Marlins.  After signing Pujols, the Cardinals will then trade him to the Angels who will in turn send a combination of players to both the Cardinals and the Miami Marlins.  The Miami Marlins will then send Hanley Rameriz to the Angels.  The following players from the Angles will be going to either the Cardinals or the Marlins, Los Angeles Angel Kendry Morales, Vernon Wells, Alberto Callaspo, Jerome Williams, Fernando Rodney, and either Erik Aybar or Maicer Izturis will be going to either the Cardinals or the Marlins.   It is not clear what players from the Cardinals and the Marlins will also be involved in the trade, but Jon Jay of the Cardinals and Gaby Sanchez of the Marlins have been possible names mentioned.

Look for more detailed information on this trade to be available in the next couple of days.
