Yu Darvish

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish will be posted by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighter on Thursday, his agent, Don Nomura, tweeted in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Darvish also posted the news on his blog (in Japanese).

If C.J. Wilson signs quickly, as expected, Darvish, 25, will be the top starter left on the market.

Last season for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Darvish went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA, striking out 276 batters in 232 innings. In his seven-year career, he's 93-38 with a 1.99 ERA, striking out at least 200 batters in the shorter Japanese season four times and walking more than 50 just once. He hasn't posted an ERA more than 2.00 since his second year in the top level of Japanese baseball -- and he was 19 for most of that season.

Many teams will be interested in the right-hander, including the Yankees, Blue Jays, Nationals, Angels and Rangers -- the five expected to be the front-runners. The Red Sox could also be interested, especially with new manager Bobby Valentine's experience in Japan where he managed against Darvish. Rosenthal tweets that Valentine "loves" Darvish. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels and Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos traveled to Japan this season to scout Darvish in person.

The posting is just the first part of a possible move stateside. After Darvish is posted, teams will have a period to submit blind bids for the opportunity to sign him. The team with the highest bid will win the right to negotiate with Darvish and after signing him will not only have to pay Darvish, but also the posting fee, which goes only to the Fighters.

MLB is a joke. Selig is a joke. If he allows either the Yankees or Red Sox to sign this guy than the he'll with the sport. MLB is broken and won't be fixed until Selig is gone and the owners have a hard salary cap. These salaries are fucked ud. Period

Anybody who pays that much money for this guy is nuts. Japanese pitchers just ruin their arms from overuse and this dude has been pitching in the majors for like seven years now. The reason why Dice-K sucks is not because he isn't talented. I'm a Red Sox fan and find him just infuriating to watch but it is not because he is not good. He just refuses to listen to anybody about conditioning, his mechanics and strategy. The guy is just completely arogant and unwilling to learn. If Darvish will actually listen to the team the gets him and change his game to the North American style of conditioning and pitching he could be good but that is a $100 million risk I wouldn't take.

I hope the Yankees learned the lesson with the "Fat Toad" and do not go after this guy. The Japanese pitchers go agaianst Japanese ball players who as a whole do not come close to MLB players. The best Japanese players end up in the MLB so they are not even pitching against the best at home. I know the market for pitchers is thin but seriously after the "posting" fee then the $$$ they will have to pay this guy can he really be worth it? Does anyone think he will be as good as CC Sabathia or Cliff Lee? He would have to be a complete game pitcher and win most of them then probably still not worth it. Do not forget his arm may not hold up for a full season the Japanese season is shorter. (Stated in article)

This kid is going to cost more than Lee by far.  Dice K was posted for 50.  This post will be higher and you will have give Darvish a contract of well over a 100 mil.  This contract is going to be astronomical.
