Rafael Furcal

By C. Trent Rosecrans

While the Angels were welcoming Albert Pujols in a pep rally in Anaheim, the Cardinals have agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with shortstop Rafael Furcal, pending a physical, CBSSports.com senior writer Danny Knobler confirms.

Furcal joined the Cardinals at the trade deadline along with case in return for minor-league outfielder Alex Castellanos. Furcal helped sure up the Cardinals' defense on their way to a World Series title.

The 34-year-old hit .255/.316/.418 in 50 games during the regular season with the Cardinals after hitting just .197/.272/.248 for the Dodgers in the final year of his three-year, $30 million deal with the Dodgers.

Furcal played in just a total of 87 regular-season games in 2011 and has played in more than 100 games in a season just once in the last four years..

With the Cardinals' keeping Furcal, it appears Jimmy Rollins doesn't have any more leverage with other teams and will most likely return to the Phillies. The Cardinals and Brewers were the other spots with shortstop openings and money to spend, but St. Louis went with Furcal and Milwaukee turning to Alex Gonzalez

Cardinals, Furcal agree to 2-year deal

I am absolutely thrilled with this extension. Not because of Furcal (although he's solid when he's healthy) but because it means the Cards won't waste $$ on Rollins. Such a joke for everyone to talk about Furcal's issues- Rollins has the exact same issues for more than twice the $$. Believe me, Rollins has been my NL league only fantasy SS for 2 years- he sucks, but thinks he's great. Glad he's with the Phillies and not Cards.

Cardinals, Furcal agree to 2-year deal

Right now its all Human Emotion playing out on both sides. No one is wrong here. We will miss the Greatest Baseball Player in this era and Alberts Family went for the Money and a Winning Team. Its over. Lets talk about Saint Louis winning another World Series. We Upgraded at SS as long as he stays healthy this Year. We need Beltran's bat. We have the Money. The Fans will still full up the stadium at the tune of 3 Million every  Year. Would be nice to upgrade the Pen too. Wainwright-Carpenter-Garcia...Not a bad Starting three

Cardinals, Furcal agree to 2-year deal

I think you are forgetting the Pitching aspect of it all : when you have two cy young pitchers in Waino and Carp you and a potential 20 game winner in Garcia you need a solid SS to make plays : Cardinals won the World Series with timely hits and GREAT pitching both starters and bullpen : last two WS winners ?  SF GIANTS AND STL CARDINALS  PITCHING AND DEFENSE :::::

You and several others need to look at the stats.
I think you need to read into those stats a bit buddy.  I love Theriot as well, but to say Furcal does not have range?  Come on man...  that's crazy talk.  Crazy I say!

Stlsportsguy,

Are you nuts?  Theriot hit better, had less errors per amount of games.  Furcal is definitely has no RANGE.  My gosh he has so many errors in his career.  He was terrible in the series.  And as for the worst fielding shortstop you need to only look at my beloved Chicago Cubs and Starlin Castro.  28 errors and 29 errors his first 2 years in baseball.  Furcal does not steal bases.  How many RBI's does he average a year?  I am not saying that Theriot is by far a superstar but at 3.3 million he has played so much better than Furcal and is so much more durable than Furcal.  I am a Theriot fan and I believe he has been shafted with the Cubs and now the Cardinals.  Neither Castro nor Furcal has been better. Except for Castro's batting average.  He still didn't drive in that many runs than Theriot and had many more at bats.  You and several others need to look at the stats.

The fact this guy is getting 7 mill a year is a great reason not to pay to go see a MLB game.... Defensively yes, offensively and speed(like he used to have) not so much... 4 mill tops what a joke these salaries have become. Jack Wilson does not deserve no 7 mill and thats what you got with Furcal. He did not do jack offensively in playoffs besides one game, despite batting leadoff. Should be batting 8th lol.

chicubs, Theriot is the worst fielding shortstop in the league.  He has no range, no arm, and no glove.  He was downright awful all year in the field.  He hit fairly well to start the season but quickly slumped.  He is a bench player at best these days.  I like the guy.  He works hard but is not a everyday player.  When healthy, Furcal's defense alone keeps him in the everyday lineup.  He is one of the better fielding shortstops in the league.  He still has decent speed, is a switch hitter and makes good contact with the ball.  A risky sign with his injuries but by far a better option than Theriot and a cheaper short term option than Rollins.
