Ryan Braun, the National League MVP, has failed a drug test given to him in October and could face a 50-game suspension if his appeal is denied,'s Mark Fainaru-Wada and T.J. Quinn report. has confirmed Braun tested positive, however a source tells's Danny Knobler that while the positive test was for a banned substance, it was not for a perfromance-enhancing drug.

Once Braun was informed he had tested positive, he requested a second test and that one came back negative, the source told Knobler.

It should be noted Manny Ramirez and Edinson Volquez did not specifically test positive for a performance-enhancing drug, but for a male fertility drug that can also be used to mask raised testosterone levels.

Major League Baseball has not announced the positive test because Braun is disputing the result. MLB doesn't announce positive tests until all appeals have been heard and denied. Sources tell that a decision will not come soon.

"It's B.S.," Braun told USA Today's Bob Nightengale

Braun also told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he wanted to hold a press conference on Saturday, but was advised against it.

"I can't wait to get that opportunity," Braun texted Haudricourt. "This is all B.S. I am completely innocent."

A spokesman for Braun issued this statement through Braun's agent: "There are highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan's complete innocence and demonstrate there was absolutely no intentional violation of the program. While Ryan has impeccable character and no previous history, unfortunately, because of the process we have to maintain confidentiality and are not able to discuss it any further, but we are confident he will ultimately be exonerated."

Braun was tested during the playoffs and was notified, according to the ESPN report, later in October.

The report says Braun tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, which was later revealed to be synthetic. MLB has asked the World Anti-Doping Agency lab in Montreal to perform a secondary test.

A report in the New York Daily News quotes a source as saying Braun's testosterone level was "insanely high" and "twice the level of the highest test ever taken.

In April, Braun signed an extension with the Brewers through the 2020 season worth $105 million.

Braun beat the Dodgers' Matt Kemp for MVP last month, finishing with 20 of the 32 first-place votes and 388 overall points to Kemps' 332. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder, finished third.

Braun would be the first standing MVP to test positive for PEDs, although several others -- Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Miguel Tejada, Jason Giambi, Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco -- have either admitted steroid use or been implicated in steroid use. Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, Braun's name will always be lumped in with those players, vindicated or not. Whispers and suspicions have kept Jeff Bagwell out of the Hall of Fame and Braun will have a black mark against him in this positive test. Even if exonerated, there will be doubts because Braun plays for the Brewers, the team formerly owned by commissioner Bud Selig.

Several players before him, including Ramirez and Volquez, have claimed fertility drugs triggered a positive test, but both served their suspensions anyway. Rafael Palmeiro blamed his positive test on a "vitamin B12" shot given to him by Tejada.

If Braun's appeal is unsuccesful, he'd be the 10th player to receive a 50-game ban under the current testing system, joining Ramirez, Volquez, Yusaku Iriki, Guillermo Mota, Jason Grimsley, Juan Salas, Dan Serafini, Eliezer Alfonzo and J.C. Romero

Ryan Braun tests positive for PEDs

Who cares, steroids should be legal anyway.

WOW!!!!   this is a brilliant idea.  yeah just what we need, more bald freaks running around in wife beaters, and ready to get into a fight at the drop of a hat.  all for the sake of looking- ummm like ... yes your on steriods!   Our country would be in much better shape if these nitwits would spend their money on getting an education and bettering themselves.   Not sure what ball players are on them or not anymore, but its ruined the game of baseball.

Ryan Braun tests positive for PEDs

Has nothing to do with the Brewers and everything to do with Ryan Braun.  Stay focused and on task Beezman. I'm not going to string the guy up before the MLB Investigation is complete.  Glad you aren't on my jury!  If he is guilty he should come clean ASAP.  Braun's role model status probably will be forever tarnished if this comes out as fact which would be a shame.  But it should serve as a lesson to all Pro Athletes...quit screwing around, play by the rules as tough as they may be.  Understand playing a Pro Sport is a privilege not a Constitutional Right.  Playing that sport has a set of rules of conduct both on the field and off the by them.  You are accountable not only to the Authority of the League, but your team, coaches, ownership and YOURSELF to be the best human being and example you can be.  If you can't committ to the standard get out of sports and do whatever self destructive activities you prefer.

Ok, let me get this straight, Pujols leaves the division, Prince is on his way out, Astro's leaving the division, Braun'll be out 50 games and off the juice and the Cubs are the Cubs.  It looks like the stars are beginning to line up so the Pirates can end the losing streak and rise to the top of the division.  Christmas is coming early this year for the Burgh.  Merry Christmas to all.

Ryan Braun tests positive for PEDs

Well that's lame and dissappointing. Hope it's not true as a Brewer fan, but if so...his real defense or excuse you can give. That said, doesn't make him an evil person...just a dumb one.

Ryan Braun tests positive for PEDs

If he tested positive for a PED in the playoffs why is it only coming out now?  Shouldn't a second test been done immediately and the appropriate action(s) been taken by MLB.  And if you are going to leak a story as big as this name the PED.  Every  nit wit and sportswriter in America are and will be speculating Braun was on steriods to heroin.  Elevated testosterone levels?  Whats considered elevated?  I doubt if I could pass that blood test, my GF thinks I'm insatiable.  Maybe Braun was pumping his libido a bit?  Is that a crime in MLB?  Its gotten to the point that the players will need to call the Commissioner to see if its okay to take a couple of Advil.    I'm not going to freak until all the cards are on the table.  Some advice for Ryan Braun..if you are guilty just come out and say it.  MLB fans are a forgiving group.

Those who aren't testing positive are just better at hiding it.  Everyone is on something.  If you had 100's of millions at stake, you would too.  Money ruins everything, just ask cardinals fans.

There hasn't been a second test yet. That's to the tool that said the 2nd test was negative. You don't have to look like a weight lifter to be on the juice. To bad for this guy. He shouldn't have won the MVP either it should have gone to Kemp.

Ryan Braun tests positive for PEDs

Braun said he did nothing wrong! so did Mark MCGwire, Sosa. Manny. Tests do lie. He got caught and should stand up and be a man and stop trying to hide it like a first graded would
