Ryan Braun

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The Baseball Writers Association of America will not strip Ryan Braun of his National League Most Valuable Player award if he is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell told the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan Braun

"I got the same question after Ken Caminiti came clean about his steroids usage, and whether we should give the 1996 MVP award instead to (second-place finisher) Mike Piazza," O'Connell told the newspaper. "The answer is no.

"We did not strip Alex Rodriguez of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas.

"The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp finished second in the MVP voting. Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes, while Kemp had 10. Braun received 388 total points in the voting to Kemp's 332. Braun finished second on all 12 ballots that didn't vote for him as the first-place finisher. Kemp had 16 second-place votes and six third-place votes. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder finished third with one first-place vote and 229 total points, followed by Arizona's Justin Upton, who had one first-place vote and 214 total points.

Braun has denied he took PEDs and has appealed the positive test.

The BBWAA, not Major League Baseball, awards the MVP and is in charge of its voting.

BBWAA won't strip Ryan Braun of MVP

Here is my problem with the situation.  Ryan Braun was tested positive during the playoffs before the MVP was awarded.  If I am drug-tested at work, they have the results in 2-3 days.  Why did they award the MVP to him if it seems they knew about him testing positive?  It seems as if their is a little collusion as to who receives the MVP.  Matt Kemp should receive the award now to make a statement to baseball players unless of course he tested positive and they have not released those results yet.

I'm done with baseball.

Matt Kemp - Real MVP

Ryan Braun cheats and still gets title?  Matt Kemp had better numbers than Braun and as of now, did not cheat.  What kind of message are they sending? Cheat, get caught and still win?

Matt Kemp should have been the MVP anyway.  Better Avg.,RBI, SB, and HR.

Another cheater gets rewarded in the baseball world.....hey, they're letting Manny Ramirez back into baseball after getting caught twice and some team will sign him hoping Manny has found a new performance enhancing drug that won't get detedted. What a joke.

Why not just have a re-vote, as they did with Brian Cushing?

So what you are implying is, that he only started using it during the playoffs... drug testing is required for the playoffs, so if had that information, he must have thought he could beat the system. Now do you think with that train of thought, he would really juice for only the play offs...

I agree with YouKnowMyName that Kemp is probably juicing too...but he did ditch Rihanna last year, so like when Romo ditched Simpson, their stats go up. Kemp should have been MVP. How could Braun get MVP when Fielder was 3rd in MVP voting??? That team had two MVPs...Kemp just had a Cy Young helping him. I also don't get why this crap was leaked a week or so after the MVP was selected...very shady timing. If guilty, then give it to Kemp, and yes, go back and strip Cam and Arod...even though Piazza was most likely a juicer too...being a catcher with power for that long is pretty suspect.

How was Kemp not the MVP in the first place?
Oh yeah I forgot they can't give CY Young and MVP to the same team.
2005 Albert Pujols won MVP
2005 Chris Carpenter won Cy Young
Both played for the Cardinals
