Ryan Braun

The Baseball Writers Association of America will not strip Ryan Braun of his National League Most Valuable Player award if he is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell told the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan Braun

"I got the same question after Ken Caminiti came clean about his steroids usage, and whether we should give the 1996 MVP award instead to (second-place finisher) Mike Piazza," O'Connell told the newspaper. "The answer is no.

"We did not strip Alex Rodriguez of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas.

"The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp finished second in the MVP voting. Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes, while Kemp had 10. Braun received 388 total points in the voting to Kemp's 332. Braun finished second on all 12 ballots that didn't vote for him as the first-place finisher. Kemp had 16 second-place votes and six third-place votes. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder finished third with one first-place vote and 229 total points, followed by Arizona's Justin Upton, who had one first-place vote and 214 total points.

Braun has denied he took PEDs and has appealed the positive test.

The BBWAA, not Major League Baseball, awards the MVP and is in charge of its voting.

On the contrary, according to what I read, the failed test revealed raised testosterone levels.  That usually means injecting or ingesting synthetic testosterone, which is a PED.

That's a lot of ink for someone who wasn't even in the majors yet for 4 MORE YEARS. Unless you are saying that HE went public at 20 years old while playing at Miami in College, made news there, eh?

Let the process come to a conclusion before condemnation.  We don't know all the facts, so arguing whether to strip the MVP award from him is putting the cart before the horse.

BBWAA won't strip Ryan Braun of MVP

I just looked up the results for 1996 the year  Caminiti won the mvp. Both leauges look like a who who among steriod users.  If the awards are going to be stripped, the #3 in both leauges would be given the award (if not just left blank)  NL: Caminiti, Piazza would now be, Ellis Burks, Chipper Jones    AL: Juan Gonzales, Alex Rodriguez would now be, Albert Belle, Ken Griffey Jr

The test in question was during the playoffs. The MVP voting is done after the regular season ends and before the playoffs start. This is done so playoff preformance or lack of it will not affect the voting, So, I'll give the BBWAA a pass on this issue, and maybe only this one.

Both that Braun tested positive for a "prohibited substance" -- not a "performance-enhancing drug" or PED. If it turns out that Braun tested positive for a stimulant, something that even former players like Hank Aaron have admitted to taking before a game to stay sharp, the suspension for his first offense would be 25 games.

And while I'm speculating here, other "prohibited substances" include marijuana and Schedule II drugs, which would have been caught in Braun's test, too.
