Ryan Braun

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The Baseball Writers Association of America will not strip Ryan Braun of his National League Most Valuable Player award if he is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell told the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan Braun

"I got the same question after Ken Caminiti came clean about his steroids usage, and whether we should give the 1996 MVP award instead to (second-place finisher) Mike Piazza," O'Connell told the newspaper. "The answer is no.

"We did not strip Alex Rodriguez of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas.

"The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp finished second in the MVP voting. Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes, while Kemp had 10. Braun received 388 total points in the voting to Kemp's 332. Braun finished second on all 12 ballots that didn't vote for him as the first-place finisher. Kemp had 16 second-place votes and six third-place votes. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder finished third with one first-place vote and 229 total points, followed by Arizona's Justin Upton, who had one first-place vote and 214 total points.

Braun has denied he took PEDs and has appealed the positive test.

The BBWAA, not Major League Baseball, awards the MVP and is in charge of its voting.

MLB is really making themselves look bad by not stripping that award from Braun...how on earth could you let him keep the award when he cheated the system...MLB needs to come down hard on these cheaters and make a point if not it will continue...I think these cheaters should sit for a whole year without pay and the second time they do it they should be done forever

Another example how no one in sports really believes this is a big problem. You get caught cheating like this, your contract should be voided and any awards won should be stripped. Braun ripped everyone off. Why is it that owners don't sue these players? Afterall, it is because of the usage of these enhancers that contibute to their contracts reaching such astronomical numbers. In the end, it is the fans that have to pay these salaries by paying 10 dollars for a hot dog, 15 dollars for parking, 12 dollars for a beer and so on. For the good of the game, we have to stand up against these cheaters harming the game. Contracts need to be voided and players need longer suspensions. Maybe even lifetime on the first offense, How else is this going to be fixed? Yes, this hurts Braun, but he will be back to making millions by June. Meanwhile, the fans will be getting gauged all season long. Steroids have already ruined the baseball I grew up with and appearantly we haven't learned much. Start voiding contracts and take leagal actions on players for signing contracts in bad faith. The alternative almost condones this. Does anyone really care about the good of the game? Doesn't seem like it.

OF COURSE HIS CHEATING AZZ WILL KEEP THE AWARD, JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER CHEATERS KEPT THEIR AWARDS AND WORLD SERIES TITLES!!!  I'm so sick of these cheaters.  AND I'M SICK OF BUD SELIG, who was quoted as saying that their minors league players are the best tested in the sport. BULL CRAP, YOU LIAR!!!

I HATE THE DODGERS, BUT ON BEHALF OF MATT KEMP, I TRULY AM SORRY TO MR. KEMP.  THAT AWARD IS YOURS

DON'T YOU LOVE BRAUNS QUOTE ABOUT A-ROD WHEN HE TESTED POSITIVE.  HEY BRAUN, HYPOCRITE CALLED, HE SAID STOP STEALING HIS LINES!!!!!!!!

Good thing Jose Reyes came back from his injury and qualified for the batting title or it would have cost Matt Kemp the triple crown then you would have really had a fiasco.

Thanks a ton Braun for being a cheater. They wont make it official but the fans know Kemp was the real MVP, just like Pizza is the real MVP of the 1996 season. I can't wait tilll the just suspend a guy for the season aftter they get caugt a second time. Obviously the current ban system is not good enough.

Another great reason to hate the BBWAA.  They messed up the HOF and the MVP frequently.  I love the reasoning that because they haven't stripped the award in the past they won't do it now.  That is reason enough to ignore any/all BBWAA awards and the HOF becuase the BBWAA has no clue.

They have never taken an MVP away from anyone, whats the sense in doing it now? This will at least show you that these awards aren't as big a deal as you thought they were. They are just given out by writers, no more important than if any of us got a group of a few dozen people together to vote on MVP and so forth. These awards mean nothing.

It just shows that if you toss enough b/s nobody looks at the real issue:  Kemp was the best player in baseball last year, including those who took PED's.
