Ryan Braun

The Baseball Writers Association of America will not strip Ryan Braun of his National League Most Valuable Player award if he is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell told the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan Braun

"I got the same question after Ken Caminiti came clean about his steroids usage, and whether we should give the 1996 MVP award instead to (second-place finisher) Mike Piazza," O'Connell told the newspaper. "The answer is no.

"We did not strip Alex Rodriguez of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas.

"The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp finished second in the MVP voting. Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes, while Kemp had 10. Braun received 388 total points in the voting to Kemp's 332. Braun finished second on all 12 ballots that didn't vote for him as the first-place finisher. Kemp had 16 second-place votes and six third-place votes. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder finished third with one first-place vote and 229 total points, followed by Arizona's Justin Upton, who had one first-place vote and 214 total points.

Braun has denied he took PEDs and has appealed the positive test.

The BBWAA, not Major League Baseball, awards the MVP and is in charge of its voting.

Ok so The Don Rey....Ryan Braun never played shortstop in the majors...He played shortstop in highschool and college. Also there is a such thing as innocent until proven guilty. And don't compare Braun to that idiot Manny Ramirez. That man is taken more then just peds...

I agree that would be a better way to handle the issue.  Leaving it blank would send a stronger and more lasting message.

"We're not going to strip him of the award because we didn't do it in the past"

Great reasoning there

The real problem with strippping a player of an award, is you then need to be 100% sure the next guy is clean. Example: Strip Caminiti and give the award to Piazza ??

The answer to that is to not give the award to the second-place finishers.  Leave the MVP award blank for that year.  Because the winner of the award used PEDs is not a reason to move the second-place finisher up.  Not giving out an award would send a stronger message about how seriously baseball is about erasing PED usage.

oh forgot to mention he'll likely rat out his teammates and other big name MLB stars too once it's said and done.  that way he can write a book and make some extra millions

Matt Kemp is the real MVP. Something seemed fishy ever since Braun went from being a shortstop to third base to left field. From shrimp to titan is what he did. Its no surprise to me. I suspected him and Hanley Ramirez both was juicing that season they got their bargain contracts for titanic seasons.

They need to strip this guy of the award. All those other guys came clean years later and some of them only after they had been caught. Braun is innocent just like Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz and Andy Pettitte was innocent too right. Hey maybe Rafael Palmeiro is innocent too!

agree with those that believe it should be stripped.  I am a cycling fan and believe Tyler Hamilton should have been stripped of his Olympic gold medal in 2004 due to his doping offense.  7 years later he eventually returned it to the USADA after eventually admitting the offense.  I expect Braun will eventually do something similar years from now after he has made millions upon millions and can in his mind comfortably retire from MLB.  it will never happen right now because he's young and there's too much $ to make.  trust me, we're all being hoodwinked now and later be subjected to the sympathy card Braun plays when he gives his tearful confession.
