Ryan Braun

The Baseball Writers Association of America will not strip Ryan Braun of his National League Most Valuable Player award if he is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell told the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan Braun

"I got the same question after Ken Caminiti came clean about his steroids usage, and whether we should give the 1996 MVP award instead to (second-place finisher) Mike Piazza," O'Connell told the newspaper. "The answer is no.

"We did not strip Alex Rodriguez of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas.

"The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp finished second in the MVP voting. Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes, while Kemp had 10. Braun received 388 total points in the voting to Kemp's 332. Braun finished second on all 12 ballots that didn't vote for him as the first-place finisher. Kemp had 16 second-place votes and six third-place votes. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder finished third with one first-place vote and 229 total points, followed by Arizona's Justin Upton, who had one first-place vote and 214 total points.

Braun has denied he took PEDs and has appealed the positive test.

The BBWAA, not Major League Baseball, awards the MVP and is in charge of its voting.

BBWAA won't strip Ryan Braun of MVP

What an embarrasment to baseball, Braun and BBWAA. How can Braun accept the mvp award with a clear conscience? How can the BBWAA NOT take back the mvp award...spineless. It's not too late to give the award to Kemp, hoping he's clean.

The difference is that the positive test is right there.  Not ten years ago.

Also, the BBWAA is a joke.  Why do writers whine about not having a tougher stance on drugs when they refuse to make a statement when given the chance?  It's like when Cushing of the Texans got that award and when the time came to make a stand, all the cowards ducked their heads.

BBWAA won't strip Ryan Braun of MVP

<span style="color: #000000;">I am a brewer/braun fan. I love baseball, it is my favorite sport of all. I am disappointed and hope it is not true. I also do not buy into all the steroid hype. MLB wants us to believe that there was actually a steroid era to make it seem like it was only a period of time that cheating was going on, and it ended. The fact that it was not an era it has always and will always go on as long as players want to improve. Steroids were used back in the Ruth days too. They were using horse steroids and whatever else they had back then. Ball scuffing, pine tar, Vaseline on baseballs...whats the difference. Cheating is cheating no matter what is being done to a body or a piece of equipment. Now steroids is a dirty word, but they can get some supplement at GNC and fail a test and be thrown under a bus by MLB, fans, writers, etc. If I go to GNC for the same supplement I wont get arrested, in trouble at all. Its a perception created around PED's. I feel if its illegal by law then worry about it, if not let a person do what they need to do to stay healthy, perform better etc. What if my work said it was against policy to not take anti biotic.  Its not illegal or against the law, it helps me get healthy and show up for work. Again, if its against the Law I say make it MLB illegal, if its legal to purchase then make it legal. Why is it all so complicated and made to look like all PED's are some dark ally dirty drug purchase? But for now there is a MLB rule and players need to be held accountable. I just feel it needs to be changed and simplified as it is all to complicated for everyone involved.

If the BBWAA writers had known of his PED use when they voted, would he still have been chosen as NL MVP by them.  If the answer is NO, then he should be stripped.  If the answer is YES, then the BBWAA should forfeit their rights to choose the MVP's.

The BBWAA and MLB has the opportunity to send a strong message to the youth of America about the consequences of cheating and illegal drug use. I hope they take that opportunity by taking away the award.

The BBWAA also needs a new secretary-treasurer, someone who is serious about fighting cheating in sports.

So the BBWAA is saying that they support steroid use. It's one thing to not take away the MVP when you learn of abuse a couple years later (although I believe they should still strip the offender) but this is less than a month later. To NOT strip it is to reward someone for cheating.

"We did not strip of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas."The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

Ever hear of "righting the ship"... That is a weak and lame excuse, that's what Pete Rose said and he is banned from baseball... This is how you change that morons... "Based on new evidence, Brauns' performance and subsequently his power numbers were inflated due to performance enhancing steriods that is banned from baseball, and since the award is based on skills, the rightful winner is Matt Kemp"... Send a message that baseball is for the pure and the not so pure will not be considered for any rewards... Just like the Olympics, you don't win the medal until you pass the peepee test.... now was that so difficult.... and speaking about peepee, grow some balls and do the right thing, you may not have done it in the past, but now is a good time to start...

I think he should give the award back if his appeal is denied. And this is a Brewers fan talking. So disappointed if this is true. Thought baseball was moving away from steriods, but if true, it shows the testing process is working to catch the cheaters.
