Pujols' wife defends husband on St. Louis radio

Albert Pujols signed with the Angels last week in a move that shocked the baseball world. We knew that. But his wife, Deidre (or "Dee Dee") says the people don't know the reality of the situation -- which is that the Cardinals' offer didn't come anywhere close to what has been reported, because it was only for five years. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“What I’m saying is it wasn’t a guaranteed situation,” she said. “When you have somebody say, ‘We want you to be a Cardinal for life’ and only offer you a five-year deal ... it kind of confused us. ...

“Well, we got over that insult and felt like Albert had given so much of himself to baseball and into the community that he at least deserved the opportunity to have real life-long -- you know, I tell you what -- we didn’t want to go through this again. Free agency, it’s stressful.”
The Post-Dispatch has reported that the Cardinals' initial offer -- what Dee Dee called an "insult" -- was for five years and $130 million. Of course, the Post-Dispatch is also reporting the offer grew to 10 years and $210 through the course of the negotiations -- which was widely reported during the Winter Meetings last week. On the flip-side, they also report that there was a "significant" portion of the deal in deferred, interest-free, money. So while Mrs. Pujols can say this move wasn't about the money, it's pretty evident it was very much about the money (Pujols signed for 10 years, $254 million and none of that is deferred). Not that I'm blaming them one bit, as $44 million is quite a chunk of change to think about turning down.

Deidre also mentioned that she was surprised Cardinals fans turned on Pujols so quickly upon the news of him signing to play elsewhere. I guess she didn't watch The Decision, huh?

In fairness, we must point out that Mrs. Pujols did say, "we still love St. Louis and always will."

Still, it was 20 minutes of justifications on a radio show in an argument she can't win. With Pujols signing, the fans of St. Louis are going to be angry, and nothing she can say will change that. This goes for free agents leaving places for more money in every sport.

YOU SAID AWHILE BACK THAT YOU HAD A BUSINESS WITH A PARTNER AND YOU ARE NOW A FAKE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR.WHILE YOU ARE REALLY ON WELFARE PLEASE STOP LYING.CAN YOU PROVE YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR.

You didn't even know what an independent contractor was until I told you but now you want proof?   LOL

You are a funny little man.   Do you mean proof like when you said you built the pawn shop in Detroit that slkaos proved you never built?  Or proof that you were in Detroit last night but couldn't provide a room number?

In a normal business situation, yes, this is what you do.  In a situation where you are trying to sign the biggest free agent to ever hit the open market, this is absolutely NOT what you do.

Eastside, great post man.  People as good as Pujols rarely if ever make it to free agency.  I don't remember anybody this good becoming an UFA in a very long time.... probably ever.  And yes, for a player you can replace overnight or even in a short period of time you certainly do start low and try to get a deal done.  But not for this guy... no way.

Based on their behavior throughout the last two offseasons, it is my belief that the Cardinals knew at least two years ago that they weren't going to enter that range.

I agree 100 percent, which leads me to a question I've asked many times before that still hasn't been answered.  Two seasons ago Pujols wasn't a 10-5 player and the Cards could easily have traded him with 2 years left on his current deal and recieved compensation in a trade that no team has ever seen before.  There probably would have been at least 5 or 6 teams if not more tripping over themselves and keeping the Cards management team up all week long trying to make that deal.   Why didn't the Cards trade him before Pujols became a 10-5 player and at that point was in the driver's seat with veto rights?  In my opinion it should have been that simple.  "Albert, here's what we've got and all we can do. Either we agree to a deal or you're going to the highest bidder".  End of story.

When you have a legend, a franchise player, that you intend to keep for life, you don't "negotiate" with that player.  You get your accountants together, figure out the max you can go to, and put together a deal for that max.  Then, you call the player and his agent in, and say, "Here's a contract.  This is our best possible offer.  We want you to spend the rest of your career with us.  We hope you'll sign it."  Read the quotes from guys like Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn and Mike Schmidt.  They all tell you that's what happened to them, and that's why they played for those teams for life.

I agree once again.  And if you do what you suggested above 2 years ago, other options still exist. The Cards rolled the dice and waited a long time.....  and they lost.

I don't blame Pujols one bit....

It is any SURPRISE to anyone that this guy had a buisness go under????What nonsense we have to read every day from this guy.He figures if he writes the longest coments it will make it seem like he is not as DUMB as he looks. In Business you don't start NEGOTIATIONS HIGH fool you start low and go up.

Hey Briancrackhead.  What business of mine went under?  Just because you are too stupid to understand what an independent contractor is isn't my fault.  I still can't believe you thought an independent contractor automatically has to be involved in construction, that was pretty funny stuff.   You are a stupid, stupid man.  Illiterate as well.... just a moron overall.

And no, when you're dealing with your franchise player, a guy that's going to be a first ballot hall of famer and who's only 31 years old, you don't "start low" .....  with anybody else maybe, but not with a guy like that.   Throw in the fact he helped bring not one but two world series titles in just the last few years to a city that was nowhere near favoured to win even once, and it's a no brainer.. you sign him.  You do anything he says because he's going to get it somewhere else if you don't.
