Norichika AokiBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Brewers won the rights to negotiate with Japanese outfielder Norichika Aoki, the Yakult Swallows announced (via Yasuko Yanagita of Japan's Hochi Shimbun).

Hot Stove League

Saturday (Japan time) the Swallows noted they'd accepted a $2.5 million bid on Aoki, whom Yahoo's Jeff Passan referred to as "Ichiro Lite, with an emphasis on Lite."

The Brewers will have 30 days to negotiate a contract with Aoki, who has played center field for the Swallows, but also left field for Japan's national team.

The Brewers have Nyjer Morgan in center field, with Corey Hart in right and Ryan Braun in left. Braun, of course, is facing a possible 50-game suspension to start the season.

Aoki hit .292/.358/.360 in 2011, down from his career averages in all departments. He is one of just four players to record 200 hits in a season in Japan.

Brewers win bid for Japanese OF Aoki

I don't see the Sox bailing on Crawford after a single season.  New manager, some lineup changes, and no doubt he'll have a much improved 2012.  A year like 2011, hard as it is, might actually provide the catharsis that allows Carl to relax and play up to his potential.

Who knows how long Braun will be out!  The Brewers should save their money and make a trade with The Redsox and acquire Carl Crawford who will flourish in The Nationa lLeague!  I'm not surprised that The Brain Trust in The Brew Crew would not offer Fielder a maximum contract and hold their payroll hostage!  Crawford is a lefty they could use and Boston would eat some of that contract.  Forget AOKI! The better deal is with Crawford who was great in Tampa but lost in Boston, A large revenue club with a horrible clubhouse!  The Brewers should make this move and The Red Sox may pay 50 cents on the dollar!

Braun playing first....LOL! Sure. Especially when the Brewers have a bum in RF. Moving Braun to RF and Hart to 1B makes much more sense. Dopey.

You'll never see all three of these guys in the OF at one time. And when Braun comes back, assuming the suspension holds, only one of them will be out there with Braun and Hart.

The Brewers need another outfielder, someone who can play leftfield, assuming Braun is out for 50 games. This guy is a lefthanded batter who hits for high average and when Braun comes back, that could spell the end of Morgan's tenure with the Brewers, depending on how Aoki and Morgan are playing. T-Plush's act could start to wear thin, and the Brewers, depending again on how things are going after the first 50-80 games, could send Morgan onward and put Aoki in a platoon with Gomez in CF. Of course, the Brewers can always use a left-handed bat off the bench, so even when Braun comes back, he could be used as a pinch-hitter.

If he is referred to as Ichiro light, and you add Gomez and Morgan with him in the outfield, that will be the weakest hitting outfield in the majors since 1980.

If the Brewers are going to move anyone, it should be the lazy outfielder Corey Hart.  I can't remember the last time I've seen Hart actually run after a grounder or one hop ball in the outfield.  He usually just jogs over to it and allows a sure single turn into a double. Hart is a tall guy and can't play any worse than the league leader in errors at 1B Prince Fielder.  Morgan/Gomez/Aoki can play in center and right field.  That is if they sign Aoki.  They also have Gamel who played 1st base this past year in the minors.  Between Gamel and Ramirez, the two should make up for some of the lost power in losing Fielder.

The team may be planning an internal move of Braun to first base.
Braun is the left fielder. Period. They are not moving him to first base. They moved him to the outfield at the beginning of his career because he was a hack in the infield. A lot of people think it's easy to move from one position to another, but to become "more than adaquate" takes a significant amount of time and repetitions. Aoki, if he is signed, would take over in CF. Morgan and Gomez would be valuable bench/PT players with the loss of Kotsay.

They better get this guy because No Prince and No Braun for at least 25- 50 games they are going to be at the bottom for at least the first 4-6 weeks of the season. A Ramiriz is not going to replace Prince thats a Joke!!
It be good that Brewers add another good hitter in their lineup, If my team the Cubs don't finish first I perfer the Brewers. If the Brewers sign Aoki, I hope the Brewers have better luck then the Cubs did. The Cubs sign Japanses player Kosuke Fusuke and he barely hit .260 with not an lot of power, he is a very good defense player.
