Long-time Philadelphia sportswriter Bill Conlin has been accused of molesting four children between the ages of 7 and 12. The alleged assaults came back in the 1970s and came to light to the Gloucester Country Prosecutor's office last year. The prosecutors took videotaped statements from the four alleged victims, but nothing could be done because the statute of limitations had expired on anything that happened before 1996.

"We would love to see justice in this case," Detective Stacie Lick of the Prosecutor's Office wrote in an email to one of the women last month (Philly.com). "So many people have been victimized by this man, but our hands are tied by the law, which does not let us prosecute."

Conlin retired from the Philadelphia Daily News Tuesday morning. The full investigative report of his alleged actions was published to the Internet by Nancy Phillips of the Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday afternoon.

"I can't even begin to express the shock, sadness, and outrage I feel by what Bill Conlin is alleged to have done," said Daily News editor Larry Platt, who immediately accepted Conlin's offer to retire (Philly.com).

Conlin began writing at the Daily News back in 1965. He long served as the Phillies' beat writer before becoming a general columnist. He also appeared on ESPN's "The Sports Reporters" for 13 years. In 2011, he won the J.G. Taylor Spink Award at the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The award is the highest honor that can be given to a writer by the Baseball Writer's Association of America.

There are many more specific details to this case, so make sure to read the entire Inquirer report if interested.

Stuff like this has been happening since the dawn of time.  Why is it becoming a story now?  Is it because the Philadelphia Inquirer needs to create revenue?  It's looks to me like the sharks are eating their own.  I don't know if the story is true or not true.  I do know it happened 40 years ago.  I thought part of the thought process of prosecuting a criminal was to get him off the street so he doesn't commit this act again.  But if this incidenct occurred 40 years ago, then why would there be a need to get an elderly gentleman off the street if there's been no report of any allegations since these alleged incidents occurred in the 1970's.  If the criminal statute has run, then the civil statute has probably run also.  I think this is almost becoming like the Salem witch trials.  Burn them all because some of them may be witches, and we just can't tell which from witch.

I'm sorry to hear Bill Conlin's career has ended so abruptly.   Whether the story is true or not, I don't see the need to report it.  No one will serve time, no one will pay restitution.  Whatever happened to forgive and forget?  If I'm Conlin, the only reason I hire a lawyer is to determine if there's libel.  Other than that, I suggest Bill should just lay low in Floride and let time, and this story, go by the by.  The Philadelphia Inquirer needs to explain why this story is being reported if no charges can be levied.  Again, I think it's to sell newspapers and demonstrate a profit to their new owners before the calendar year runs out.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I support the prosecution of child molesters.  They should be investigated, in order to protect our young folks.  But this particular story just doesn't seem right.  Maybe I'm wrong.  I suspect we'll learn more in the coming weeks.

Have to laugh at the Nolan Ryan thing. That was Conlin, absolute contrarian. In part, that was why he was a can't miss read. He could make you laugh, piss you off, etc. I certainly could be wrong, but I think Conlin was at the forefront supporting Pete Rose for the Hall.

This guy refused to vote Nolan Ryan into the Hall of Famer because "he didn't like him".

This tub of lard deserves everything he gets...

Wow, can't believe it. Conlin was a great writer whom I have followed for many, many years although he has been far less active in recent years. Always sarcastic and grouchy, but enjoyed his writing nonetheless. Sadly, I guess this awful issue will be front and center for a long time. Guess it should be. Bad year to be a Penn State fan and a Daily News fan. Good news is that I am not connected to or am a fan of Syracuse. Magically, it seems ESPN and other media outlets have buried that one.

I never understood why charges like these have a statute of limitations. Rape of any kind should not have a statute of limitations.

Is our society really this sick.  The sink hole is expanding.  Penn State and Syracuse have given victims courage to speak up.  I hope all speak up and the twisted alleged pervs rot in jail and hell.

Where exactly did they put that "statue of limitations"? Is that in front of city hall?
