Carlos BeltranBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Carlos Beltran will likely pick his new team before Christmas, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes, noting the Cardinals are one of five teams still in contention for the switch-hitting outfielder.

Goold writes that Beltran has "varied offers from five different teams," according to a source. The Cardinals could certainly use him in right field, the spot Lance Berkman has vacated to take over for Albert Pujols at first base. The Cardinals are also without Allen Craig, who has undergone knee surgery this winter.

Yahoo's Tim Brown wrote the Blue Jays, Red Sox and "perhaps" the Rays are interested in Beltran, while Goold notes there's another National League team in the bidding. Brown reports the 34-year-old Beltran is getting offers of two years and three years.

Beltran, a three-time Gold Glove winner, is known to want to continue to play in the field, as opposed to DH, which could give the Cardinals an advantage over the American League teams.

Goold notes the Cardinals are still interested in 32-year-old outfielder Coco Crisp, who unlike Beltran can still play center field.

Ya, that's what the Jays need. ANOTHER OUTFIELDER!!! Not enough with Bautista, Thames, Rasmus and now Francisco. Ya, we need a 5th OF. Last I checked, the Jays were week on the right side of the infield. Somewhere a certain Prince might  be able to play. Then you can shift Lind to OF/DH. Still holding out hope. Last thing we need is an injury prone Outfielder in Beltran.

Jays will not sign Prince because in two years Joey Votto is a free agent and he will want to come home. Sign Beltran now and deal for some starting pitching and then watchout.

Um DS Smith, Lind isnt terrible in the field. He hasnt won a gold glove but he was pretty solid last season at first base, especially since it was his first season there. Now if you want to talk terrible fielder, look at Edwin Encarnacion...

Cardinals stay away from Beltran, he has been overrated for many years. Not worth the money.

I'd rather the Boston Red Sox go after Yoenis Cespedes than Carlos Beltran. Cespedes isn't even in his prime yet while Beltran is past his prime. Unless you can get Beltran to take a 1 or 2 year deal, then I don't see it as worthwhile going after a guy past his prime. I'd rather sign Cespedes to a 7 year deal than Beltran to a 3 year deal. Sign Cespedes until he's 32-33. Then let him go. I just don't get signing a player already past his prime. I understand signing a guy who's in his prime to a contract that doesn't end until he's 32-33 but to sign a guy already past his prime to more than a 2 year deal? Pass.

The Cards won't pony up the cash. They'll buy that box of cereal instead. He'll wind up in the AL East where the Jays and Sox will pay money. He won't give a damn if he is a DH or not if he's making more than he would in St. Louis.

Snider and Thames for Matt Garza? You are insane. Even Lind, Drabek and Thames probably wouldn't be enough considering Lind and Thames are terrible in he field, Lind could be declining offensively and Thames is still unproven. Matt Garza is a proven major league pitcher in his prime who has a sub 4.00 ERA. You aren't going to get a player like that for Snider and Thames, regardless of whether he is a FA after this year.
