The St. Louis Cardinals and free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran have agreed to a two-year contract worth $26 million, both Jon Heyman and Scott Miller of CBSSports.com have confirmed. The deal also includes a full no-trade clause. The news of this deal was first reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The World Series champion Cardinals found out a few weeks ago that long-time face of the franchise Albert Pujols was headed to the Angels via free agency. Also, that same week, news broke that outfielder Allen Craig -- who was slotted to move to right field as Lance Berkman moved to first base to replace Pujols -- had surgery and will miss around two months of the 2012 season. So the Cardinals were left with a glaring hole in their lineup. Beltran easily fills that void.

More Hot Stove
Beltran, 34, is a switch-hitter and had a big bounce-back season in 2011. He hit .300/.385/.525 with 35 doubles and 22 home runs, making his sixth All-Star Game. He battled injuries in 2009 and 2010, but -- aside from a down year back in 2005 -- Beltran has been extremely productive with the bat whenever he's in the lineup, sporting a career .857 OPS.

Beltran will now join a still-potent Cardinals batting order. Yes, losing Pujols hurts, as he's only the best player in baseball, but here's how the lineup could look for the 2012 Cardinals:

1. Rafael Furcal, SS
2. Jon Jay, CF
3. Matt Holliday, LF
4. Lance Berkman, 1B
5. Carlos Beltran, RF
6. David Freese, 3B
7. Yadier Molina, C
8. Skip Schumaker or Daniel Descalso, 2B

With a healthy Adam Wainwright re-joining the starting rotation and the bullpen in better shape than it was when the 2011 season began, don't underestimate the Pujols-less Cardinals.

My bad I swore Rollins was 28, still would rather have him than Furcal.

Depth...at 13 mil a year? wow...I am in the wrong line of business....
Seriously?  You needed to see that Beltran signed for $13 million/year to realize that a professional baseball player is probably a better business than what you do?

Beltran finally played a decent amount of games last year but I would worry about the age and injury history...

Just because the Cards had money since they failed to keep Albert is no reason to overspend on Beltran.

Losing the best Player in Baseball hurt but now it looks like we are defintely going to make the Playoffs and who knows if it can happen again. Our Starting Piching is upgraded with Wainwright and the Pen is better also. We signed Furcal and Beltran and that should make up for Pujols Productiion. I like this Lineup Furcal.Craig.Beltran.Holliday.Berkm

an.Freese.Molina.Shumaker....1 Through 7  are tough Outs. Remaining Helathy is for all clubs to worry about not Just the Cards. I like our First Three Starters. Wainwright.Garcia.Carpenter.

Wow! 13 million years for an injury-proned outfielder...the Cardinals must be really desperate! They already have Matt Holiday.

Cards would not have repeated anyway. They used up all their luck this year. They were good, but somebody got a cluth hit (usually is is NOT a star) somebody got that last out to win a game. WOrd is pujowls figned with american league because of designated hitter. That makes sense.

that move for beltran is ok but what about center fleider the cardainls need one because jon jay is not going to start every game and your backup is unknown.  you should know that Beltran can move to center fleider and put berkman at rf and keep matt holliday at LF than put skip on 1st

One assumption many are making is that Beltran will not stay healthy for his 2 year contract and Pujols will stay healthy for 10 years.  One injury to Albert and you have an expensive bench warmer with ZERO clubhouse skills.  Pujols wanted out of the NL so he could be DH for the latter half of his contract.

One area Beltran will really trail Pujols is in the # of double plays he hits in.

Gotta love the additional depth.  It is what is with Albert...  it's not about replacing him, it's about putting the right people in position for the '12 Cards... and right now it's looking pretty damn good.

Albert is some guy that play on and AL team now, that's all.
