The St. Louis Cardinals and free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran have agreed to a two-year contract worth $26 million, both Jon Heyman and Scott Miller of have confirmed. The deal also includes a full no-trade clause. The news of this deal was first reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The World Series champion Cardinals found out a few weeks ago that long-time face of the franchise Albert Pujols was headed to the Angels via free agency. Also, that same week, news broke that outfielder Allen Craig -- who was slotted to move to right field as Lance Berkman moved to first base to replace Pujols -- had surgery and will miss around two months of the 2012 season. So the Cardinals were left with a glaring hole in their lineup. Beltran easily fills that void.

More Hot Stove
Beltran, 34, is a switch-hitter and had a big bounce-back season in 2011. He hit .300/.385/.525 with 35 doubles and 22 home runs, making his sixth All-Star Game. He battled injuries in 2009 and 2010, but -- aside from a down year back in 2005 -- Beltran has been extremely productive with the bat whenever he's in the lineup, sporting a career .857 OPS.

Beltran will now join a still-potent Cardinals batting order. Yes, losing Pujols hurts, as he's only the best player in baseball, but here's how the lineup could look for the 2012 Cardinals:

1. Rafael Furcal, SS
2. Jon Jay, CF
3. Matt Holliday, LF
4. Lance Berkman, 1B
5. Carlos Beltran, RF
6. David Freese, 3B
7. Yadier Molina, C
8. Skip Schumaker or Daniel Descalso, 2B

With a healthy Adam Wainwright re-joining the starting rotation and the bullpen in better shape than it was when the 2011 season began, don't underestimate the Pujols-less Cardinals.

Beltran signs two-year deal with Cardinals

Carlos will be a good addition to the already potent line-up. This trade gives better balance to the Cardinals without the heavy presence of super-star Albert Pujols causing distractions and pressure from everyone to deliver due to a ridiculous mega-million dollar contract. This new look of the Cardinals provides a well-balanced team on a level playing field containing no noticeable prima-donnas yet overflowing with that electric spark that good chemistry and good camaraderie brings. The biggest advantage will be no pressure. The Cards can relax, enjoy one another and have fun. The Angels? Look for favortism, division, envy and chaos with their new addition. Money can't buy teamwork, chemistry or championships.

I still don't understand why Beltran commands the money he does.  His age, injuries and inability to produce in clutch moments doesn't equate to the money he receives.  Good luck Cards.

".....losing Pujols hurts".......simply, hurts?  " he is only the best player in baseball".  Hurts?  Ask any manager in the NL Central if they would rather face Beltran or the best player in baseball.  The loss of Albert AND Tony La will more than simply hurt the Cards.  The Cards got hot down the stretch and won it all last season.  Respect.  The two year NO TRADE clause may come back to haunt them.

Beltran signs two-year deal with Cardinals

I like the signing of Beltran by the Cardinals organization. The signing of Beltran means that Berkman will have full time duties at first base because of the departure of Pujols to the Angels. This move also adds a switch-hitter to their lineup. The only concern that the Cardinals should have about this is that Beltran has been known to be "injury-prone" at times, but when he's healthy he will put up solid numbers.Cool

If this team stays healthy, they are still really good.  But do you really expect them to do that?  You have to think Furcal, Holliday, Berkman, and Beltran miss games at some point.

Go Phillies....time to dethrown the champ.  (please?)

Just don't count on him in a big spot.  As a Mets fan, he put up good numbers but never came through in the clutch.  Cardinal fans know exactly what I'm talking about.  Good looking lineup....

THE REST OF THE NATIONAL HAS TO BE LOOKING. The signing of Beltran is large. We will probably get 25 HR's and 100 RBI's in a full season.
Hook that up with Furcal-Craig-Berkman-Holliday-Frees

e-Molina and where does anyone see a weak link. That is seven very good hitters in a row. I just hope Beltran stays healthy in CF. He can be relived by Jay anyday or time so that is a good situation also. Our top Three Pitchers are also very Good. Wainwright-Garcia-Carpenter. Who knows what we can get from our 4 th Stater Loshe but in the 4th spot he might shine. Our Pen is now solid. We have Motte our closer and a nice array of lefties and righties. We can dream that STL can win another World Series with this Team this Year. Really not a far fetch dream... Hey STL MGT here's a clue ...SIGN MOLINA THIS YEAR. Lets not go through that again !

Would be nice to see St. Louis in the playoffs again with albert pujols either learning how to play golf or going to Disneyland. Perhaps he could audition as one of the Seven Dwarfs -- Dopey

I like this pickup, but since my only reason for living is to see the Cubs never succeed, I am content.
