Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been suspended from Venezuelan League play for 66 games (ESPN Dallas), which is the rest of this season and all of next season. Torreabla struck an umpire in the mask recently. League President Jose Grasso Vecchio called Torrealba's behavior unacceptable and a violation of league rules, in announcing the suspension.

Here's the video evidence:

The suspension does not, however, carry over into Major League Baseball. The Rangers are reportedly still mulling over their options with the catcher.

Torrealba was born in Caracas, Venezuela and plays for the Caracas Lions when playing in his native country. He has issued the following statement through the Rangers:

"I wanted to express my sincere apologies to all parties for my actions during the Venezuelan Winter League game on Friday. I have extended an apology to the Rangers organization as well. I am embarrassed for my conduct, and personally relayed that feeling to the umpire after that night’s game. On the field, I strive to be an example for children, especially those in my native Venezuela, and I regret my actions. I understand the reactions to the incident and will make every effort to set a positive example in the future."

Torrealba, 33, hit .273/.306/.399 in 419 plate appearances for the Rangers last season, serving as a backup option for when Mike Napoli either needed rest, was used at first base or served as a designated hitter.

That was a very touching apology written by Torrealba's PR rep.

We don't know what happen or what was said in game that lead up to the incident.
Torrealba like some MLB players in the winter leagues has a sense of entitlement.
Doesn't take much to set them off.

We all know that out of all the hate crimes and bigotry in the history of the planet, Venezuelan Baseball Umpires are at the top of the list!
This almost sounds like a sarcastic response.

This guy is one of the best catchers in the world...oh yeah, he's basically a bum backup to Napoli. I bet he'd have a different point of view if he got the ax from the Rangers. Seriously though does anybody think anyone in the MLB gives a damn what the loser does in a different league? I doubt ti.

First you decry racially inflammatory speech.  Then the very next sentence, you claim that Venezuelans are known for racism.  That's very funny.  We all know that out of all the hate crimes and bigotry in the history of the planet, Venezuelan Baseball Umpires are at the top of the list!  It's about time someone exposed the real source of mankind's problems: Venezuelan Umps!  You may be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize next year for the courage to expose these Venezuelans. It's about time that someone did.

Torrealba has always been one of those players on the other team you especially hated. Always celebrating in an over-the-top manner and staring people down for no reason. Clearly a hot-head. This doesn't surprise me at all.

Rangers ought to cut this clown and MLB should ban him. Rangers don't need him anyways, they have Napoli. Adios Yorvit!!

I want everybody to come back and give me 5 stars when Hugo Chavez blames the U.S. for this happening. And I want bonus points when Sean Penn agrees with him.

I truly wonder what might have been said between them in the previous innings. The umpires these days have been POWER tripping worse than some of the players. They need to call the games as they see them and when the arguments start and they toss someone just toss them and walk away. Walking toward the player shows, after you have tossed them from the game your wanting them to start a argument. Time for the umpires to quit trying to cause unnessary conflicts.
