Andrew Bailey

The Red Sox have their closer, acquiring Andrew Bailey from the A's, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports. The Red Sox sent outfielder Josh Reddick along with minor-league third baseman Miles Head and right-handed pitcher Raul Alcantara, while sending outfielder Ryan Sweeney to Boston along with Bailey.

Josh ReddickBailey is the third pitcher the A's have traded this season, along with starters Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez

Bailey, 27, will replace Jonathan Papelbon, who signed with the Phillies, as the Red Sox closer. A two-time All-Star, Bailey has 75 saves in his first three seasons with a 2.07 ERA. He had 24 saves and a career-high 3.24 ERA in 2010.

Reddick, 24, has struggled to find time in the Red Sox lineup, but managed to play 87 games in 2011, logging 278 plate appearances, hitting .280/.327/.457 with seven home runs and 28 RBI.

The 20-year-old Head hit .299/.372/.515 with 22 homers and 82 RBI at both Class A levels, splitting his time almost equally between Greenville and Salem. Alcantara, 19, started 13 games in the rookie league and short-season Class Am going 1-4 with a 2.20 ERA, striking out 50 batters in 65 1/3 innings.

Boston also gets the 26-year-old Sweeney, who hit .265/.346/.341 last season for the A's, but has hit just 14 homers over parts of six seasons with the White Sox and A's. Sweeney is arbitration-eligible, as is Bailey.

Last week after the Gonzalez trade, A's general manager Billy Beane said the team was looking to rebuild in hopes of having a young, talented team in time for a new stadium.

Bailey joins the new-look bullpen in Boston along with recently acquired Mark Melancon, while Sweeney will work in a platoon role in the Boston outfield.

PLEASE, LET'S QUIT THE SHARADE!   MLB should consolidate 4 teams to 2, this is ridiculous.  The A's are once again minor league feeders after developing talent.  They can fight it out who gets the ax, probably the 2 lowest teams in attendance.   Of course this would only help the product on the field and that is not their main concern.   For that matter, NBA should do the same.

Red Sox get Bailey, Sweeney from A's

My opinion is that the Red Sox got a great deal - a quality closer for some low minors player which may or may not pan out. I know Bailey has had some injuries but as long as he's not injured right now the Sox fills a huge hole at closer and easily wins this deal. I think Bailey is better then Madsen and it looks like the red sox do too. Poor A's fans as soon as a player gets good they are traded or if they are arbitration eligible it's bye bye. Hopefully with the move to San Jose they can get some more fans and hopefully the owners won't be so CHEAP!

DEX_MORGAN stop smoking that crack alright boy. Where do these idiots come from. The Red Sox get a good young closer in Bailey from the A's in which they get him cheap & will be there closer for many years to come. Good trade by the Red Sox.

Bet you thought exactly the same thing last year didn't you eggslab??? Truth is the Sox rotation is no better than the Yankees rotation and last year proved that. Funny Sox fans always think the Yanks are getting old and than they lose to them, again and again. Yanks have no young talent, right??? Hehe, keep on whistling as you walk past the graveyard pal. TRUTH, Sox have no idea what the F they are doing at this point. DISARRAY would be a kind way to characterize their current status. If the Sox wanted to impress someone, why didn't they sign Heath Bell and keep their three players. That would have impressed me a hell of lot more than trading for a closer that while talented cannot stay healthy...... Holy crap man, get a grip.

OMG!!! The A's are having a fire sale!! This is why they haven't won a championship in forever!! Are they trying to do the "Major League" thing and trying to relocate?? Us fans are getting very upset. I have seen BB make this team competetive. I hope he sees what us fans don't!
Where have you been?  The A's are ALWAYS having a fire sale.  Just like San Diego and Pittsburgh and Kansas City and all the other small market teams developing talent only to lose it at or just before arbitration/free agency.  As long as there is no hard salary cap/floor baseball will continue to be an unfunny joke.

You really said "weenie?"  Speaks volumes... Clown
You really said "clown?" Speaks volumes... Weenie

From the looks of this trade, the Sox apparently got a very decent closer and a Josh Reddick clone with less power for Josh Reddick himself and some unknown prospects. I guess Oakland is officially conceding that it can't compete with Los Anaheim & Texas and just don't care anymore. The best part of this deal from Oakland's perspective has to be that they acquired a player named Miles Head, regardless of how good he is.

Oakland has lost 3 good players in a fire sale, but in return then got  4 or 5 players that should make Oakland a better team. I expect that Oakland will try make couple more trades where they will try to stock pile on talent for the future, Oakland knew they were not going be a good team next year.
