Dave Duncan

Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan is taking a leave of absence, the team announced on Thursday.

"As far as how long he'll be gone, no one knows," general manager John Mozeliak told FoxSports.com.

Duncan, 66, is leaving the team to be with his wife, Jeanine, who underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in August. Duncan missed more than a month of the season to be with his wife, but returned for the postseason. Bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist served as the pitching coach during Duncan's absence. However, the team has not named an interim replacement for Duncan.

The team's release said Mozeliak and new manager Mike Matheny will meet "in the near future to determine the team's course of action to fill Duncan's position during his absence."

Duncan is considered one of the best pitching coaches in baseball.

Cards' pitching coach taking leave of absence

Obviously you are a Cubs fan with a frozen heart because you are missing the point of this article. It is about the poor health of this man's wife, not about cheating and his ability to turn around pitchers careers.  Where is your compassion?  Put aside your hatred for the Cardinals and try to show some respect here,  I know how hard that is for some of you up there in the Windy City.

lumpoco---Dave is a very good pitching coach but a lot of time his staff's have not been ranked in the top 5 in his league, let alone MLB.  All these pitchers you felt he turned from mediocre to AS is mostly untrue as well.  Eck was a 20 game winner and 2 time AS before they converted him to a closer in the later part of his career. Welch and Honeycutt were also productive pitchers before they got there.

Now lets get to cheating....Unfortnately, There has been cheating in baseball since it started: whether it's stealing signs, putting juice on the ball, corking bats, steroids....  Mazzone knowingly knew Smoltz was putting something on the ball, but he didn't make him.  That's like Duncan and LaRussa told Ricky, Canseco and McGwire to do steroids, they both knew he was doing it, and how do we not know that more of that locker room was not doing it.  So please lumpoco, bring a better take than this crap you gave previously, because there is hardly any truth you brought.....
