Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has received a two-year contract extension to remain in his current role.

Selig had previously said himself he would retire when his current contract expired -- which was set to be at the end of the 2012 season -- but evidently he's had a change of heart. This has happened at least twice before, when Selig said he would retire and ended up sticking around.

"I am very humbled by the request to stay on, and I look forward to building on the great momentum our game has seen in recent years," Selig said in a statement.

Allen H. "Bud" Selig, 77, took over as acting commissioner in 1992 and was then named full-time commissioner in 1998. He had previously been owner and team president of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Under Selig's watch, Major League Baseball has undergone significant changes. The wild card and newly realigned divisions came first.

Also, four expansion teams were introduced, interleague play was introduced, stiff penalties for performance-enhancing drug use have been implemented and limited use of instant replay is now used. Selig also started the World Baseball Classic and, of course, decided to award home-field advantage in the World Series to the league that wins the All-Star Game.

Moving forward, there are also further changes to the playoffs and the Astros will be moved to the American League.

Selig seems to be a rather polarizing figure among fans, so he'll continue to be that lightning rod for at least another two years. And at this point, it almost seems as though he'll be doing so for the rest of his life.

Bud Selig gets two-year contract extension

sure why not right i mean stern  still has a job  right...he only turned blind eyes to the biggest scandal ever to a major sports program of steriods use and when it finally was called out by someone he got black flagged from all of baseball he hired some fake ass detective to shy it awy from him.

and the whole playoff structure that he wants to change as well is just awesome i mean who doesnt want a bunch more of shitty teams to make the post season  dont worry about tradition of the sport bud that was thrown out when you let roid rage take over to get some ratings up of that old boring baseball game.

fucking scumbag is all he is and all he ever will be ! let pete back in the game you crooked fuck!

ddt, you must be insane.Comparing Bartmans goof to Seligs distruction of the record books is like comparing Kathy Bates to Miss America.I've been in love with baseball since 1969.Steve Bartman probably loved the game too.Selig deserves much hatrid, but even more than that, he deserves a replacement. One thing he doesn't deserve is a 22 M$ paycheck.Where's Bowie Kuhn when you need him.Larry King,George Mitchel,George Will have all expressed interest in the job & all 3 of them have a love for the game that can't be denied.Same goes for Billy Crystal. There are too many people who have a genuine love for the great game of baseball & Bud Selig is not one them!

oh, lets not forget that he allows his pals to take loans from MLB (wilpons) when they are bankrupt.  They should be forced to sell the team.  How is the sorry state of the Mets better for baseball, and what has the commissioner done to address that?  Give more loans.  Again, if your in Buds back pocket, your ok.

as long as he's in charge, MLB is going in the wrong direction.  he's still not accountable for the steroid era he presided over.  he botched an all-star game.   sure the owners are getting rich and the players....oh wait, that's all they care about.  Not the people paying the freight.

Not a fan of the move - but I can't say I'm surprised either. I still think it will be sooner than later that he decides he's done working but I'm hoping for the sooner.

I guess I'll just have to appreciate everyone's passion for the game.  I love the game of baseball but not enough to hold such strong hatred towards one person.   Are you the same people who blame Bartman for the Chicago Cubs blowing the NLCS?

Report: Bud Selig to get extension as commish

Now that he has ruined baseball, the extra time will provide him a chance to destroy it completely.  This jacka$$ should be fired immediately, not given an extension.  He's about as useful as LSU's offense.

Of course he will take the job. Where else could he make that kind of money for doing such poor job performance? Like taking candy from babies. I had hoped for a breath of fresh air, bt instead, it's that same old rotten stink for the next couple years.

Report: Bud Selig to get extension as commish

They said his legacy is that he has increased baseball revenue by 7.5 times from when he started.  To me that means I am being charged about 7.5 times as much for tickets, parking, concessions etc from when he started.  He has done little or nothing to help the fans.  Am I wrong?
