Bud Selig gets two-year contract extension

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has received a two-year contract extension to remain in his current role.

Selig had previously said himself he would retire when his current contract expired -- which was set to be at the end of the 2012 season -- but evidently he's had a change of heart. This has happened at least twice before, when Selig said he would retire and ended up sticking around.

"I am very humbled by the request to stay on, and I look forward to building on the great momentum our game has seen in recent years," Selig said in a statement.

Allen H. "Bud" Selig, 77, took over as acting commissioner in 1992 and was then named full-time commissioner in 1998. He had previously been owner and team president of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Under Selig's watch, Major League Baseball has undergone significant changes. The wild card and newly realigned divisions came first.

Also, four expansion teams were introduced, interleague play was introduced, stiff penalties for performance-enhancing drug use have been implemented and limited use of instant replay is now used. Selig also started the World Baseball Classic and, of course, decided to award home-field advantage in the World Series to the league that wins the All-Star Game.

Moving forward, there are also further changes to the playoffs and the Astros will be moved to the American League.

Selig seems to be a rather polarizing figure among fans, so he'll continue to be that lightning rod for at least another two years. And at this point, it almost seems as though he'll be doing so for the rest of his life.

Intelligent post Gaam 71072. FYI, Barreta was a television charactar and a Beretta is a firearm. What are you, like twelve. Enough of the BS killing people crap on a sports site. Enough of that on the news in real life. This is said from an NRA member who owns a "BERETTA".

That being said Selig is not only a tool of the owners he is an owner! Not old school but Old Boy network. The commisone'rs office is supposed to look out for the good of the game including owners, players and oh yeah the fans. Remember us. Same guy who let McCourt buy the Dodgers but won't let Cuban in because Cuban  he is old school not Old Boy. Get someone independent.Someone who knows you don't allow an All Star game to end in a tie.

I grew up watching the old Kansas City Royals playing the Yankees for the AL pennant. Those old KC teams with Brett etc, now that team would have been broken up after a year or two and a player like G. Brett would have went to another team for a bigger paycheck. Also the all star games was a chance to see National League Players against American League Players and matchups that could only be seen in the World Series. Now Selig tries to force the All Star game down our throats with home field advantage at stake and the players do not want to play in the game. The truth is at the time when he first became Commissioner I first heard about the Small Market teams, The early 90’s A’s still had a lot of big time vets such as Henderson, Canseco, McGuire etc. Selig owning the Brewers a small market team, you would think that he would come at the Commissionership from a fair and balanced way. But competitive balance went in the opposite direction since he has become commissioner. Now he has screened all of the new ownership to just worry about their bottom line making a profit and not winning a championship. It’s funny you never hear anything from a small market owner talking about fairness, they just collect the check. What gets my goat the most about Selig is that he threatens the small market cities with contraction or relocation to have them shell out money for a new Stadium when the owner in turn does not spend any additional money on the baseball team as a measure of good faith. Yes there are fannies in the seats according to Bud but the game has been over for a while and you killed it Bud.

Can someone just walk up to him and empty the clip of a 9mm Barretta into him and end his pathethic existence?  When he dies I'll be throwing a party.

I am from Milwaukee and I agree 100% completely with the anti-Selig posts in this blog. Bud Selid was one of the ALL TIME WORST OWNERS in baseball. Why would he even be remotely qualified to run all of baseball. Under his tenure the Brewers missed the post season for 29 years in a row .... 29!!! Uner Mark Aantanascio we have been there 2x. The city paid for Miller Park with tax dollars and Bud had to have it built in bummy old West Allis, instead of downtown where it would have revamped the city, all because he was going to make money off the parking lot for a few more years per the agreement at the old site. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. Has anyone seen what the downtown baseball parks have done to places like San Diego? Trust me Milwaukee could have benefited from that.

The strike, the PED's, the high salaries, the tainting of the game and it's records. It's just disgusting. All under Bud Selig's watch. They built a statue outside of Miller Park for this idiot. Just a moron.

And for those doorknobs on this blog that disagree and oh he couldn't stand up to the players association. That's BS. What you should have done, and do now, is say no guarantees salaries, yes a salary cap, testing before every game for PED's .... and if you don't like it then you have to play baseball. Period.

Its too expensive to test before every game? I'll tell you what's to expensive that's taking a family of four to the ball game. The integrity of the game is something you can't afford to lose. Barry Bonds with an asterik on the HR record, These guys ALL LYING to congress. That's why the expense of testing before every game is worth the cost.

And oh by the way try telling your 8 year old that Prince is no longer a Brewer because he wants more millions than the team can afford so he's going to another city where they can pay him more. Oh and that fat head of Ryan Braun well .... the reason he is suspended for 50 games is because he cheated and took steroids that make you stronger and better (but they are bad) so even though you are only 8 years old it's important to know no to take them, and oh by the way some people say it's herpes so since your heard abaout that .... let's have that conversation too.

Now I get the fact that  these players are responsible but they do it .... BECAUSE THEY CAN .... and most do and get away with it. Bud Selig is a greedy little smithers wimp just like the dude on the Simpsons. I hate that guy.

Check your facts.... MLB is exempt from a whole lot of U.S. Constitutional Law, and the commissioner acting "in the best interests of baseball" can edict drug testing, or at least give the Federal Authorities access to it's files and employees in criminal investigations.
The Mitchell Report, and other similar activiites are given special dispensation ans consideration binding outside a court. The Players acssociation could have tried to sue, or strike based on a Commissioners demands deemed "in the best interests of baseball", but they couldn't have won, in the courts or in the public eye...

Congress re-iterated these facts in their mandate that Selig act on the PED issue, after being refused action by Selig (using the same CBA excuse, among others) when it was a mere suggestion by Congress.

Bud Selig has been as dishonest about what he knew about PED's and when he knew it as most players. The only difference is, Selig wasn't put in a situation to either tell the complete, incriminating truth, or be liable for perjury.
